São Jorge Travel Tips & FAQ

Portugal › Azores › São Jorge

São Jorge requires a bit more logistical planning than the larger islands due to its rugged terrain and limited services. A few practical tips will make your trip smoother.

São Jorge Travel Tips: Getting to São Jorge

São Jorge Airport (SJZ) is on the island’s eastern plateau near the village of Santo Amaro, a 20-minute drive from Velas. SATA Air Açores operates daily flights from Ponta Delgada (45 minutes) and a few weekly flights from Terceira (25 minutes). The airport’s exposed plateau location means flights are occasionally disrupted by high winds, particularly in winter. The inter-island ferry from Velas connects to Pico (Madalena, 1.5 hours) and Faial (Horta, 2 hours), running 1-2 times daily in summer and less frequently in winter. Ferry tickets via Atlânticoline; book ahead in July and August.

São Jorge Travel Tips: Getting Around the Island

A rental car is essential. The island is 54 km long and the fajã access roads are not served by public transport. Car rental at São Jorge Airport costs €40-60 per day. The main road runs along the central ridge; the roads down to the fajãs are steep, narrow, and winding. Some fajã access roads (particularly on the north coast) are unpaved and can be rough after rain. A 4×4 is not essential but gives peace of mind on the rougher tracks. Automatic cars are very limited. Fill up with fuel in Velas or Calheta: there are no petrol stations on the fajã access roads or in small villages. Taxis are available in Velas and Calheta but must be called for rural pickups.

São Jorge Travel Tips: Practical Information

Tap water is safe. The euro (€) is the currency. ATMs are in Velas and Calheta; carry cash if heading to the fajãs for the day, as there are no ATMs outside the towns. Cards are accepted in town hotels and restaurants; fajã cafes may be cash-only. English is spoken in hotels and tourist services but less widely than on Faial or São Miguel. Mobile coverage is good along the ridge road but patchy or absent in some fajãs. The health centre is in Velas. Pack hiking boots (the trails are muddy even in summer), a waterproof layer, and swimwear for the natural pools. The UV index is high year-round due to the Atlantic latitude.
