Best Time to Visit São Jorge

Portugal › Azores › São Jorge

São Jorge rewards hikers above all other visitors. The island’s famous fajãs , flat coastal plateaus formed by ancient landslides , are connected by a network of trails that rank among the best coastal walking in the Azores. Add world-class cheese, uncrowded surf breaks, and natural swimming pools in dramatic cliff settings, and you have an island that punches far above its weight. Here is the best time to visit São Jorge by activity.

Best Time to Visit São Jorge: Overall

June and September are the best all-round months. June delivers warm but not hot weather (22°C / 72°F), low rainfall, blooming fajãs, and the lively Festa de São João in Calheta. September brings warm seas (22°C / 72°F), excellent hiking, the thinnest summer crowds, and cheese aged from spring milk at its prime. Both months avoid August when accommodation is tightest. If hiking is your main activity, May and October are also excellent choices with cooler temperatures and even fewer visitors.

Best Time to Visit São Jorge for Hiking

May, June, September, and October are the prime hiking months. The official Trilho das Fajãs (Fajãs Trail) runs the length of the south coast and connects a dozen fajãs via cliffside paths. The most famous section is the descent to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, a 2-hour round trip that drops from the clifftop to a fajã with no road access and a tidal lagoon famous for its clams. Summer (July and August) works for hiking but start early to beat the heat on exposed cliff sections. Winter hiking is limited to lower coastal routes: the cliff paths become dangerously muddy, and the high plateau trails close. Always check conditions with the Velas tourist office before setting out: some fajã access tracks close after heavy rain regardless of season.

Best Time to Visit São Jorge for Surfing

São Jorge’s north coast fajãs , particularly Fajã de São João, Fajã da Penedia, and Fajã dos Cubres , produce some of the best and least crowded surf in the Azores. Winter (October to March) brings the largest, most consistent swells from North Atlantic storms, with wave heights of 2-4 metres on the best days. The fajã setting makes for a uniquely dramatic surf experience: you are surfing at the base of 400-metre cliffs. Summer (May to September) brings smaller, more beginner-friendly waves. Water temperatures range from 16°C (61°F) in winter to 22°C (72°F) in summer; a 3/2mm wetsuit works in summer, 4/3mm in winter. There are no surf shops or board rental on São Jorge: bring your own gear.

Best Time to Visit São Jorge for Cheese

Queijo São Jorge DOP is one of Portugal’s great cheeses: a firm, slightly spicy cow’s milk cheese produced on the island since the 15th century. The dairies and the União de Cooperativas in Beira (the main production centre, near Velas) welcome visitors year-round for tastings and factory tours (Monday to Friday, free entry). Cheese aged 7-12 months is available year-round, but spring and summer are when the dairies are busiest and the freshest cheeses are available. The annual cheese fair (Feira do Queijo) usually takes place in May or June; check dates with the Velas tourist office. You can buy vacuum-packed cheese to take home; it travels well.
