Santa Maria Events & Festivals

Portugal › Azores › Santa Maria

Santa Maria’s event calendar is smaller than the larger Azorean islands, but the island’s signature festival, Mare de Agosto, is one of the best music events in the archipelago. Religious festivals and village celebrations fill the summer calendar. Here is what is on and when.

Santa Maria Events: Mare de Agosto (August Sea)

The island’s headline event, held over three days in mid-August on Praia Formosa. Mare de Agosto is a music festival with a stage built directly on the beach, featuring a lineup of Portuguese and Azorean artists spanning rock, pop, traditional, and electronic. The festival began in the 1980s and has grown into a major draw, bringing several thousand visitors to an island of 5,500. Camping is available near the beach. Tickets cost approximately €30-40 for a three-day pass. Accommodation across the island sells out for the festival weekend; book by April if you plan to attend. The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, with food stalls and a craft market alongside the music.

Santa Maria Events: Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres

Santa Maria’s most important religious festival, held in Vila do Porto in May. The event centres on the image of Christ, with a candlelit procession through the town’s decorated streets, masses at the main church, and communal meals. The festival draws pilgrims from across the Azores. Dates vary by year but typically fall in the second or third week of May. Accommodation in Vila do Porto can be tight during this period.

Santa Maria Events: Carnaval

Santa Maria’s Carnaval celebrations, held in February or March depending on the liturgical calendar, are known across the Azores for their irreverent humour and elaborate costumes. Parades run through Vila do Porto with floats, dance troupes, and satirical themes. The dances (bailes) continue late into the night at community halls. It is a genuinely local event rather than a tourist spectacle, and visitors are warmly welcomed.

Santa Maria Events: Festas do Divino Espírito Santo

Like every Azorean island, Santa Maria celebrates the Holy Spirit festivals between May and July. Each parish hosts its own celebration with a Sunday mass, procession of the silver crown, and the distribution of sopas do Espírito Santo to the community. The Vila do Porto celebration is the largest and usually falls in June. Visitors are welcome to join the meal.
