Santa Maria

Santa Maria is the southernmost and easternmost island of the Azores, often called the “Sun Island” for its warmer, drier climate compared to the rest of the archipelago. At 97 km² with about 5,500 residents, it is the only Azorean island with significant white sand beaches, the oldest geological formations in the archipelago, and a distinctive red desert landscape at Barreiro da Faneca. Vila do Porto, the main town, was the first settlement in the Azores, founded in 1432. • Winter (December to February): Mild by European standards with highs of 17°C to 18°C (63°F to 64°F) and lows around 12°C (54°F). Rain averages 80-100mm monthly, mostly from passing fronts. The island is quiet , many restaurants in Vila do Porto reduce hours. Surfers head to the north coast where winter swells produce reliable breaks.
