Getting Around Faial: Rental Cars
A rental car is the most practical way to explore Faial. The island’s attractions are spread along the coast and into the interior, and public buses do not reach key sites like the Caldeira trailhead or Capelinhos consistently. All major rental agencies operate at Horta Airport (HOR): Ilha Verde, Autatlantis, and Europcar have desks in the arrivals hall. Rates start at €40-50 per day for a manual compact car in low season, rising to €60-80 in July and August. Book 2-3 months ahead for summer. Automatic transmission cars are rare in the Azores: if you need one, book as early as possible and expect to pay €70-100 per day. The main roads are well-paved, but the road to the Caldeira car park is a winding mountain road that can be foggy; drive slowly. Car rental agencies often close on Sundays, so plan pick-ups and drop-offs accordingly.

Faial has a limited bus network operated by Farias, departing from the terminal near the Horta Marina. The main routes connect Horta to Capelinhos via the south coast (passing the airport, Varadouro, and the volcano) and Horta to Cedros and Salão on the north coast. Schedules are designed for local use, not tourism: there are typically 2-4 buses per day on each route, with no service on Sundays or public holidays. Fares are cheap (€1-3 per journey), but buses are not practical for sightseeing unless you are willing to spend hours at each stop. For a half-day tour, you can negotiate a fixed price with the driver (expect €70-90 for 4 hours covering Capelinhos, Caldeira, and viewpoints). Taxis in rural areas must be called by phone; ask your accommodation for the number of a reliable driver. Tipping is not expected but rounding up is appreciated.

Scooter hire is popular with visiting sailors and budget travellers. A 125cc scooter costs about €30-40 per day. The island’s coastal roads are ideal for two wheels, with little traffic outside Horta and spectacular ocean views.
