Merzouga is a village of a few thousand people, but the area travelers call Merzouga actually spans several small settlements strung along the edge of Erg Chebbi. Each has a different feel, price range, and distance to the dunes. This Merzouga neighborhoods guide covers the main bases, and the Merzouga weather by month page has the climate for each season.

Merzouga Neighborhoods: An Area by Area Guide

Merzouga Village Center

The village center holds most of the riads, auberges, restaurants, and tour operators, plus the small shops selling water, scarves, and sandboards. It is the most convenient base if you want to walk to dinner or arrange a trek on the spot, and it sits about 2 km from the foot of the main dunes. Mid range riads here average 350 to 600 MAD per night. The center suits first time visitors who want services nearby and do not mind a short drive or 25 minute walk to the sand.

Hassilabied

Hassilabied is a quieter village 4 km north of the center, sitting right at the edge of the dunes. Several kasbahs here open directly onto the sand, which means a dawn climb starts from your door rather than a 4×4 transfer. Prices run 400 to 800 MAD for a kasbah with a pool. Hassilabied suits couples and photographers who want to be on the dunes at sunrise and are happy to eat at their hotel most evenings.

Khamlia

Khamlia, 7 km south, is the Gnawa music village and the least developed of the four. There are a few guesthouses and desert camps run by local families, and prices start around 250 MAD. Staying here puts you beside the music performances and a quieter stretch of dune, but you will need transport for most meals and any shopping. It suits travelers who want a slower, community based stay and do not mind the extra distance.

The Desert Camps inside Erg Chebbi

The camps themselves sit inside the dune field, 30 to 60 minutes by camel or 15 minutes by 4×4 from the village edge. They range from basic bivouacs with shared toilets to luxury tents with private bathrooms and real beds. Most people stay one or two nights in a camp and spend the rest of their trip in a village kasbah, which gives you the dune experience without giving up hot showers. For specific camp names and links, see where to stay in Merzouga.

Merzouga Neighborhoods: Choosing Your Base

Pick the village center for convenience, Hassilabied for direct dune access, Khamlia for music and a local feel, and a desert camp for the overnight experience. Whichever you choose, plan your things to do in Merzouga around the transfer times, most camps and hotels coordinate pickups at 16:00 to 17:00 for the sunset trek.
