Merzouga is a desert village in southeastern Morocco that sits directly beneath Erg Chebbi, a 22 km long sand sea whose dunes rise up to 150 meters. It is the country’s main gateway for camel treks, overnight desert camps, and Saharan stargazing. July averages 41°C (106°F) and January nights drop to 3°C (37°F), so the comfortable window for visiting runs from March to May and late September to November.
Welcome to Merzouga
Merzouga lies in the Draa-Tafilalet region, roughly 560 km southeast of Marrakech and 470 km south of Fes, close to the Algerian border. The village itself has a few thousand residents, but the name now covers a string of settlements, Merzouga center, Hassilabied, Khamlia, and Tanamoust, that line the western edge of the dunes. Life here runs on Berber (Tamazight) and Arabic, with French widely spoken in the hotels, and the local economy revolves almost entirely around desert tourism.
The draw is Erg Chebbi itself, one of only two large ergs in Morocco. The dunes shift a few meters each year under the wind and glow orange at sunset, then the sky turns to near total darkness once the sun drops. Most visitors combine a village stay with one night in a camp inside the dunes, reached by camel or 4×4, and spend the day on quad bikes, sandboards, or visits to the Gnawa music village of Khamlia and the Rissani souk.
Merzouga Climate and Seasons
Merzouga has a hot desert climate with a yearly average high of 28°C (82°F) and about 110 mm of rain, almost all of it falling between October and April. The defining feature is the daily temperature range: a July day that peaks at 41°C (106°F) can cool to 25°C (77°F) after midnight, and a January afternoon of 18°C (64°F) drops to 3°C (37°F) by dawn.
- Winter (December to February): highs of 18 to 20°C (64 to 68°F), nights to -1°C (30°F), and the year’s only meaningful rain at 10 to 13 mm per month.
- Spring (March to May): highs climb from 24°C (75°F) to 32°C (90°F), nights stay mild, and the chergui sand wind can blow between March and May.
- Summer (June to August): highs of 37 to 41°C (99 to 106°F) with peaks near 47°C (117°F), and almost no rain.
- Autumn (September to November): highs cool from 35°C (95°F) to 23°C (73°F), and October and November bring the first showers since spring.
Best Time to Visit Merzouga
The best months are March, April, October, and November, when daytime highs sit between 23°C (73°F) and 29°C (84°F) and nights stay above 8°C (46°F). Avoid July and August for the 40°C (104°F) plus heat, and pack for freezing nights if you come in December or January. The Dayet Srji salt lake fills with water and flamingos between March and May, and the regional desert festivals in M’Hamid El Ghizlane run in March and October.

Where to Stay in Merzouga
Accommodation splits into village hotels and desert camps. Kasbahs and riads in Merzouga center and Hassilabied give you a pool, hot water, and restaurants, while the camps inside Erg Chebbi trade those comforts for a night on the sand with music around the fire.
