Tijuana packs a border city’s energy into a compact center: a historic shopping street, a domed cultural center, a serious craft beer scene, and a beach 15 minutes from downtown. This things to do in Tijuana list gives you opening hours, ticket prices and practical tips. For where to sleep near each area, see the where to stay in Tijuana guide.

Things to Do in Tijuana: Downtown and Avenida Revolución

Walk Avenida Revolución

This is Tijuana’s historic main drag, once the heart of 1920s-1950s tourism and today a lively strip of pharmacies, souvenir shops, bars and taco stands. It is free to walk and most shops open around 10 am to 8 pm. Start at the landmark arch near the corner of Calle Primera and work south. Weekday afternoons are quietest; Friday and Saturday nights bring the biggest crowds.

Visit the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT)

CECUT, on Paseo de los Héroes in Zona Río, is the city’s signature cultural venue, recognizable by its spherical IMAX dome nicknamed La Bola. The complex holds the Museo de las Californias, a rotating art gallery, a botanical garden and an aquarium. General admission to the museum galleries runs about MXN 48 (roughly US$3); IMAX dome screenings cost extra. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 10 am to 7 pm, closed Mondays.

Eat the Original Caesar Salad at Caesar’s

The Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana in 1924 by Italian chef Caesar Cardini, and his namesake restaurant still serves it tableside at Hotel Caesars on Avenida Revolución 1079. The classic salad costs around MXN 250 (about US$15) and is prepared with the original dressing made from scratch at your table. Reservations help on weekends. For other dining, the Tijuana neighborhoods guide covers the best food streets.

Things to Do in Tijuana: Beaches and Outdoors

Playas de Tijuana Boardwalk

Playas de Tijuana is the city’s beach neighborhood, about 15 minutes west of downtown. The Malecón, a paved boardwalk, runs along the sand with seafood stands, cafés and the beach in front. The ocean here is cool year round, 15-20.5°C (59-69°F), so bring a light layer even in summer. Parking is free along the boardwalk but fills by midday on weekends.

See the Border Fence at the Pacific

At the western end of Playas de Tijuana, the US-Mexico border fence runs into the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the only places where the international boundary meets the sea, and there is a viewing area on the Mexican side. You can look across to Border Field State Park and, on clear days, the San Diego skyline. It is free and open anytime, with the best light in the late afternoon.

Parque Morelos

Parque Morelos is a large urban park in the east of the city with a lake, picnic areas, walking paths and a small zoo. Entry to the park is free; the zoo charges a small fee of around MXN 20 (about US$1). It opens daily around 9 am. It is a good family stop if you are crossing from the Otay side or staying in the eastern neighborhoods.

Things to Do in Tijuana: Culture, Sports and Beer

Catch a Xolos Match at Estadio Caliente

Club Tijuana, nicknamed Xolos, plays Liga MX soccer at Estadio Caliente, a 33,333-seat stadium near the Agua Caliente area. The season runs roughly July to May, with home matches most weekends. Tickets generally run MXN 200-500 depending on the opponent and section, and you can buy them online or at the stadium box office. Match days are loud and family friendly. Check the Tijuana events and festivals page for the season calendar. For more detail, read our best time to visit Tijuana guide.

Tour the Craft Breweries of Plaza Fiesta

Tijuana has become one of Mexico’s craft beer capitals, with more than 30 breweries. The densest cluster is around Plaza Fiesta on the east side, where Insurgente Tap Room anchors a group that includes Mamut and Border Psycho. Pints run about MXN 70-120 (US$4-7). Many tap rooms are open from early afternoon to late evening, Thursday through Sunday. The Tijuana travel tips page has transport details for getting around safely after dark. Visit Agua Caliente Casino and Racetrack

The Agua Caliente complex combines a casino, greyhound track and sportsbook, and it is one of the city’s long-running entertainment landmarks. The casino floor is open daily, entry is free, and the dress code is casual. It sits next to the Agua Caliente golf course, so you can pair a round of golf with an evening at the tables.
