Things to Do in Sapporo

Japan β€Ί Hokkaido β€Ί Sapporo

Sapporo, Hokkaido’s capital of 2 million, works as a year-round destination. In winter, the Snow Festival draws 2 million visitors and nearby ski resorts have Japan’s best powder. In summer, the city is a green, walkable base for day trips to lavender fields and national parks. Here are the specific sights worth your time.

Things to Do in Sapporo: Attractions and Activities

Odori Park

Odori Park is Sapporo’s central axis, a 1.5km green strip running east-west through the city center, dividing the city into north and south. It spans 13 blocks (Odori Nishi 1 to Odori Nishi 13) with fountains, flower gardens, sculptures, and seasonal events. The Sapporo TV Tower at the eastern end has an observation deck at 90 meters (open 9am to 10pm, 1,000 JPY, view of the park and the mountains beyond). The park hosts the Snow Festival in February, the Lilac Festival in May/June, and the Summer Beer Garden in July/August. Free, open 24 hours. The park is a 10-minute walk south from Sapporo Station via the underground walkway. It is the reference point for Sapporo’s grid address system. The fountains at the western end run May through October.

Sapporo Beer Museum and Beer Garden

Housed in a 1890 red-brick Meiji-era building at North 7, East 9, the Sapporo Beer Museum is Japan’s only beer museum. It traces the history of Sapporo Beer (founded 1876) and Hokkaido’s development through three floors of exhibits. The self-guided tour (Japanese and English signage) ends at a tasting counter where you can sample Sapporo Classic (Hokkaido exclusive), Black Label, and the original Kaitakushi Beer (200 to 400 JPY per glass). Open Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 8pm (last entry 7:40pm). Free entry. The adjacent Sapporo Beer Garden (Ghengis Khan Hall) serves Hokkaido’s signature lamb barbecue (Genghis Khan or Jingisukan) with all-you-can-eat courses from 2,500 to 4,500 JPY. Allow 1.5 hours for the museum, longer if dining. Reach via bus 188 from Sapporo Station (15 minutes, 210 JPY) or a 25-minute walk from Higashi-kuyakusho-mae subway station.

Hokkaido University Campus and Ginkgo Avenue

Hokkaido University, directly north of Sapporo Station, has one of Japan’s most beautiful urban campuses. The main attraction is Ginkgo Avenue (Ichou Namiki), a 380-meter road lined with 70 ginkgo trees that turn brilliant gold in late October. The campus also has the Sapporo Agricultural College Farm No. 2 (a preserved 1877 wooden barn), the Hokkaido University Museum (free, open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm), and a central lawn popular with students in summer. The campus is open to the public year-round. Free entry. The ginkgo tunnel is at its peak roughly October 20 to November 5, drawing crowds on weekends. In late October, the university hosts a Ginkgo Festival with food stalls. The campus is a 10-minute walk from the north exit of Sapporo Station. Check the October weather for conditions during peak color season.

Sapporo Clock Tower (Tokeidai)

The Sapporo Clock Tower, built in 1878 as a drill hall for Sapporo Agricultural College, is the city’s most recognizable historic building. The wooden structure with a clock imported from Boston in 1881 has survived the modernization of the surrounding district. Inside, exhibits cover the building’s history and early Sapporo. Located at North 1, West 2, a 5-minute walk from Odori Station. Open daily 8:45am to 5pm (last entry 4:50pm). Entry: 200 JPY (adults). Allow 20 to 30 minutes. The tower is smaller than most visitors expect and surrounded by modern buildings; the classic photo is from the small park on the south side. It is best as a quick stop rather than a major destination.

Sapporo Central Wholesale Market (Jogai Market)

The Sapporo Central Wholesale Market at North 12, West 21 is the city’s main seafood distribution hub. The outer market (Jogai Ichiba) has 60+ shops selling Hokkaido specialties: king crab (taraba-gani), hairy crab (kegani), sea urchin (uni), salmon roe (ikura), melons, and corn. Numerous small restaurants within the market serve kaisendon (seafood rice bowls, 1,500 to 4,000 JPY) and crab set meals. Open daily 7am to 5pm (some shops close by 3pm, restaurants close around 2pm). Free entry. The auction floor visit requires a separate tour booked in advance. Market restaurants are busiest 10am to 1pm. The market is a 10-minute walk from Nijuyonken Station on the Tozai subway line. This is the best place in Sapporo for a fresh seafood breakfast. Bargaining is not practiced.

Mt. Moiwa Ropeway and Observatory

Mt. Moiwa, 531 meters, offers Sapporo’s best panoramic views. The ropeway ascends from the base station (5-minute bus or taxi from Ropeway Iriguchi tram stop) to a mid-station, then a mini cable car reaches the summit observatory. The view takes in the entire Ishikari Plain, the Sea of Japan, and on clear days the Daisetsuzan mountains. The summit has a restaurant, a planetarium (300 JPY), and a bell of happiness popular with couples. Open daily: April to November 10:30am to 10pm, December to March 11am to 10pm. Round-trip ropeway + cable car: 1,800 JPY (adults). Night views from the summit are rated among Japan’s top three along with Hakodate and Nagasaki. The restaurant serves basic meals (1,200 to 2,000 JPY). Winter visits require warm clothing; the summit can be 5Β°C to 8Β°C colder than ground level. Summer sunset views around 7pm are excellent with the July weather offering the clearest skies.

Jozankei Onsen

Jozankei is a hot spring town in a forested valley 27km southwest of central Sapporo (40 minutes by bus from Sapporo Station, 800 JPY). The town has 20+ ryokan (traditional inns) and hotels drawing sodium chloride thermal waters from the valley floor. Day visitors can use the public footbaths along the Toyohira River (free) and the Hoheikyo Onsen (an outdoor bath in a forest setting, 1,000 JPY). The surrounding Shikotsu-Toya National Park has hiking trails. Autumn colors peak in mid-October with the valley’s maples turning red and orange. Winter snow transforms the valley with illuminated ice sculptures at the Jozankei Yuki Touro festival (late January to early February). Bus 7 or 8 (Kappa Liner) from Sapporo Station Bus Terminal departs hourly. Jozankei works as either a day trip or an overnight onsen stay. Book ryokan 1 to 2 months ahead for autumn weekends.
