Sapporo’s event calendar is built around its seasons: snow and ice in winter, flowers and dance in early summer, beer gardens in midsummer, and autumn leaves in October. The Snow Festival is the city’s defining event, but the calendar has depth beyond February.
Sapporo Events and Festivals Calendar
Sapporo Snow Festival (Yuki Matsuri) – First Full Week of February (7 Days)
The Sapporo Snow Festival runs for 7 days starting on the first Monday of February (typically February 4 to 11). It is Japan’s largest winter event with 2 million visitors. Three venues: Odori Park (main site, 1.5km of snow sculptures up to 25 meters wide and 15 meters tall, illuminated 5pm to 10pm), Susukino (ice sculpture competition, 60+ works along Ekimae-dori, illuminated 5pm to 11pm), and Tsudome (family site with snow slides, snow rafting, and indoor play areas, open 9am to 5pm). The Odori site is free and open 24 hours during the festival. The sculptures are built by the Japan Self-Defense Forces and international teams. The International Snow Sculpture Contest at Odori Nishi 11 has teams from 20+ countries. Book hotels in Sapporo by October for the festival period. Temperatures during the festival average -4°C (25°F) with fresh snow likely. Wear insulated waterproof boots, thermal layers, and carry hand warmers (kairo, sold at every convenience store for 100 JPY). See the February weather data for conditions. The festival is crowded on weekends; weekdays are more manageable.
Sapporo White Illumination – Late November to Mid-March
The Sapporo White Illumination runs from late November through March 14 at two sites: Odori Park (Odori Nishi 1 to Odori Nishi 8) and Ekimae-dori (from Sapporo Station to Odori). Over 520,000 LED lights illuminate trees and create light tunnels and installations. The Odori site features a different theme each year. The lights are on daily from 4:30pm to 10pm (until midnight during the Snow Festival). Free entry. The German Christmas Market operates in Odori Park (Odori Nishi 2) from late November to December 25 with wooden stalls selling mulled wine (Glühwein), sausages, and Christmas ornaments (open 11am to 9pm). The illumination is a free, romantic winter activity that runs four times longer than the Snow Festival and requires no advance planning.
Yosakoi Soran Festival – Second Week of June (5 Days)
The Yosakoi Soran Festival runs for 5 days in early to mid-June with 280+ dance teams and 30,000 dancers performing in 20 venues across Sapporo. The dance combines elements of Kochi’s Yosakoi style with Hokkaido’s traditional Soran Bushi fishing song. The main stage is in Odori Park with judging at Odori Nishi 8. Dancers wear colorful costumes and use naruko (wooden clappers). The festival is energetic, loud, and one of Sapporo’s most joyful events. Free to watch from anywhere along the parade routes and stages. The June weather averages 22°C (72°F) with moderate rain risk. The festival is less known internationally than the Snow Festival but draws 2 million spectators, mostly domestic. Hotel prices rise moderately. The full schedule is published in May on the official Yosakoi Soran website.
Sapporo Lilac Festival – Late May to Early June
The Sapporo Lilac Festival (Lilac Matsuri) takes place over two weeks from late May to early June in Odori Park (Odori Nishi 5 to Odori Nishi 7). It celebrates Sapporo’s official tree with 400 lilac bushes in bloom. The festival has a tea ceremony corner, live music, and lilac-themed food and drink (lilac soft serve, lilac wine). Free entry. The Kawashimo Lilac Garden (Odori Nishi 12 to 13) has an additional 200 bushes. The festival is relatively low-key compared to the Snow Festival or Yosakoi Soran but marks the start of Sapporo’s outdoor event season with mild temperatures (18°C / 64°F).
Sapporo Summer Festival and Beer Garden – Mid-July to Mid-August
The Sapporo Summer Festival runs for 5 weeks from mid-July through mid-August, centered on the Odori Beer Garden in Odori Park. The park’s blocks from Odori Nishi 5 to Odori Nishi 11 are taken over by beer gardens from Japan’s major breweries (Sapporo, Asahi, Kirin, Suntory) and international brands. Each block seats 500 to 1,000 people at long communal tables. Beer is 600 to 800 JPY per mug (500ml). Food stalls sell grilled Hokkaido corn, lamb barbecue, and sausages. Open daily 12pm to 9pm. Free entry. The beer garden is popular with office workers for after-work nomikai (drinking parties) and busy on weekends. The Bonbori (paper lantern) display at Odori Nishi 1 to 2 runs concurrently. The Susukino district hosts the Natsu Matsuri in the same period with a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade.
Sapporo Autumn Fest – September (3 Weeks)
The Sapporo Autumn Fest runs for three weeks in September in Odori Park (Odori Nishi 4 to Odori Nishi 11) and is the city’s major food festival. Over 200 booths represent Hokkaido’s culinary regions selling ramen, seafood, lamb barbecue, soup curry, wine from Yoichi and Furano, and fresh produce. The festival is divided into themed sections: Hokkaido Ramen Zone, Seafood Zone, and Sweets Zone. Open daily 11am to 8:30pm. Free entry; food and drink priced per item (500 to 1,500 JPY). The September weather is comfortable at 22°C (72°F) though rain is common (140mm). The festival is an excellent way to sample Hokkaido’s food diversity in one location.
