Winter temperatures stay mild, with January lows of 4°C (39°F) and highs of 13°C (55°F) , snow is almost unknown.

The best time to visit is mid-April through mid-June and mid-September through mid-October. During these windows, daytime highs of 19 to 27°C (66 to 81°F) make archaeological sites and city walking comfortable, rainfall is moderate, and crowds are thinner than the July-August peak. The sea becomes swimmable by late May (19°C/66°F) and stays warm through mid-October (22°C/72°F). Avoid August if possible , the combination of peak heat (30°C/86°F), peak tourism, and the Ferragosto holiday shutdown makes it the least pleasant month for sightseeing.

Summer (June to August)

Hot and dry. July and August at 30°C (86°F) with just 24 to 35mm of rain. Sea temperature peaks at 26°C (79°F). July is the sunniest month at 310 hours. Pompeii is punishingly hot midday , visit at 09:00 opening. August is Ferragosto; some businesses close.

Autumn (September to November)

September is still summer-like at 27°C (81°F). October brings comfortable 22°C (72°F) highs but increasing rain. November is the wettest month at 148mm. Mid-September through mid-October is the best autumn window.

Winter (December to February)

Mild by European standards at 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F) highs. Rainy: 95 to 141mm per month. Lowest hotel rates (excluding Christmas week). Museums and Pompeii are empty. Sea too cold for swimming.
