Indore is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh and the commercial capital of central India, set on the Malwa plateau at 553 metres above sea level. It gets about 930mm of rain a year, almost all of it in the June to September monsoon, and runs hot in summer with May averaging 40°C (104°F). The city is best known for its Holkar-era palaces, the Sarafa night food market and the Rang Panchami colour festival, and it makes a practical base for day trips to Ujjain, Mandu and Omkareshwar.
Welcome to Indore
You can see Indore’s core in a day: start at the seven-storey Rajwada Palace in the Old City, walk the jewellery lanes to the mirrored Kanch Mandir, then head out to the Khajrana Ganesh Temple before returning to Sarafa Bazaar after 21:00, when the market flips from gold shops to one of India’s great street-food strips. Beyond the centre, the new western districts of Vijay Nagar and Palasia hold the malls, restaurants and hotels, while a second day opens up Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar temple or the medieval hilltop fort of Mandu.

Where Is Indore and What Shapes Its Weather
Indore sits in western Madhya Pradesh on the Malwa plateau, about 553 metres above sea level, roughly 190 km west of Bhopal and 55 km from the holy city of Ujjain. The elevation keeps the city a few degrees cooler than lowland central India and cuts the humidity of the monsoon slightly, though the southwest monsoon still delivers about 930mm of annual rain between June and September. The plateau location also means wide temperature swings in winter, when December nights drop to 10°C (50°F).
Where to Stay in Indore
Choose Vijay Nagar in the west for five-star comfort and malls, the Old City for character and street food, or the airport corridor for fly-in convenience.
