Bhopal’s event calendar leans on one major winter festival, Lokrang, plus the pan-Indian festivals of Diwali and Holi and one of India’s largest Islamic congregations. Because most events are outdoor and the city’s summer heat is extreme, nearly every festival lands between October and January, which doubles as the best weather window described in our best time to visit Bhopal guide.
Bhopal Events and Festivals: Lokrang (26 to 30 January)
Lokrang is a five-day festival of folk and tribal performance that opens every year on Republic Day, 26 January, and runs through 30 January at Ravindra Bhavan on the lakefront. Organised by the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum and the state directorate of culture, it stages classical and tribal dance, folk music and craft demonstrations every evening, and admission is free. Performers from all over India and occasional international troupes take the open-air stage, and it is the single best reason to plan a January visit. Read our Bhopal neighborhoods for more.
Bhopal Events and Festivals: Diwali (October or November)
Diwali, the festival of lights, falls in late October or early November depending on the lunar calendar. The Upper Lake promenade and the Old City glow with oil lamps and firecrackers, and families decorate doorways with rangoli. Expect heavy crowds in Chowk Bazaar in the days before the festival and louder-than-usual firework noise on the main night. Check the Bhopal weather by month table, since Diwali week is usually dry and mild.
Bhopal Events and Festivals: Holi (March)
Holi, the spring colour festival, lands in March and sees the city’s streets and lakefront covered in coloured powder for one raucous day. It is a fun but messy event, so wear old clothes and keep electronics sealed in plastic. Note that Van Vihar National Park closes for Holi and the following day (Rangpanchami), so plan museum visits for those dates. Read our where to stay in Bhopal for more.
Bhopal Events and Festivals: Aalami Tablighi Ijtema (December)
The Aalami Tablighi Ijtema, held near Taj-ul-Masajid each December, is one of the largest Islamic congregations in India, drawing hundreds of thousands of worshippers for three days of prayer and religious discourse. Dates shift with the Islamic calendar, so confirm before travelling. Roads around Kohefiza are closed or heavily congested during the gathering, and hotel rooms in the area book out well in advance. Bhopal Events and Festivals: Bhopal Utsav and Dussehra
Bhopal Utsav, a heritage festival of music, dance and crafts, is held in February at Bharat Bhavan, the lakeside arts complex designed by architect Charles Correa. Dussehra in October ends with the burning of large effigies of Ravana in open grounds across the city. Both are free to attend, and both fall within the comfortable things to do in Bhopal season, so they are easy to add to an existing itinerary. Read our Bhopal travel guide for more.
