Leh, the capital of Ladakh in northern India, sits at 3,500 metres (11,500 ft) in a cold desert where the Himalaya block the monsoon and the sun shines around 300 days a year. Daytime highs reach 25°C (77°F) in July, while January nights fall to -14°C (7°F) and the mountain roads close under snow. This Leh weather and travel guide gives you the climate at a glance, the seasons, quick facts and links to seven detailed guides covering everything from the best time to visit Leh to the best places to stay in Leh.

Welcome to Leh

Leh has been a stop on the Silk Road trade routes for centuries, and today it is the launchpad for Ladakh’s monasteries, high lakes and mountain passes. The town itself is compact: a busy bazaar, a medieval old town below the 17th-century Leh Palace, and quiet residential lanes that climb toward Shanti Stupa. Because everything around Leh sits above 3,000 metres, the first rule for any visitor is to go slow for two days while your body adjusts to the thin air.

Leh Weather at a Glance

Leh has a cold desert climate with about 93mm of rain a year, most of it in July and August, and extreme temperature swings between day and night. July is the warmest month, averaging 25°C (77°F) by day and 11°C (52°F) at night, while January averages -1°C (30°F) by day and -14°C (7°F) at night. The best travel window is May to September, when the Leh-Manali and Srinagar-Leh highways are open and daytime highs run from 17°C to 25°C.

Leh Seasons: A Quick Snapshot

  • Winter (December to February): temperatures down to -14°C, both highways closed, only the airport open, and the frozen Zanskar river hosts the Chadar trek.
  • Spring (March to May): warming from 7°C to 17°C by day, roads reopen in mid to late May, and apricot blossom colours the lower valleys.
  • Summer (June to August): 21°C to 25°C by day, 4mm to 13mm of rain, the Hemis Festival and peak trekking season, and the highest hotel prices.
  • Autumn (September to November): clear skies, the Ladakh Festival and marathon in September, then the passes close with the first snow in late October.

Leh Location and Climate

Leh lies in the Indus valley in northern India, about 430km east of Srinagar and 430km north of Manali, ringed by the Ladakh and Zanskar ranges. Its cold desert climate comes from the rain shadow of those mountains, which strip most moisture from the monsoon. That is why Leh gets less rain in a year than Mumbai gets in a single afternoon, and why the air is so dry and clear, with 3,000 hours of sunshine annually and very high UV through the summer.

Leh Quick Facts

  • Best months to visit: May to September, with September best for clear skies and fewer crowds.
  • Warmest month: July, averaging 25°C (77°F) high and 11°C (52°F) low.

  • Wettest months: July and August, about 13mm each.
  • Annual rainfall: about 93mm, with 300 days of clear sky.
  • Airport: Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL), 4km from town.
  • Altitude: 3,500 metres (11,500 ft), so acclimatise for two days on arrival.

Where to Stay in Leh

Leh’s hotels and guesthouses cluster in three zones: the Main Bazaar and Fort Road for convenience, Changspa for quiet gardens near Shanti Stupa, and the southern lanes of Skara and Chubi for budget homestays. Rooms run from about Rs 700 a night in a homestay to Rs 15,000 in a luxury hotel. For a full area-by-area breakdown with named hotels, read the where to stay in Leh guide.
