Konstanz, the largest city on the western shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee), sits at 405 metres elevation where Germany meets Switzerland, with a mild lake climate, a Gothic minster and one of the country’s best-preserved medieval old towns. July highs average 25.7°C (78°F), January lows fall to -1.6°C (29°F), and the city sees about 834 mm of rain a year. Use this Konstanz guide to plan around the weather, the lake and the seasons.
Welcome to Konstanz
The city divides neatly into two halves: a lively old town south of the Seerhein, and quieter lakeside districts to the north. The Rhine leaves Lake Constance right here, and the Swiss border at Kreuzlingen is a five-minute walk from the centre, which means two currencies and two countries in a single afternoon’s stroll. Ferries fan out to Meersburg, Insel Mainau and the Swiss shore, and the flat cycle paths along the water connect most of the city in under half an hour.
Konstanz Weather at a Glance
Lake Constance moderates Konstanz’s climate, keeping winters milder than inland Germany and summers a touch cooler than the Rhine valley. Summers run 24-26°C (75-79°F) by day, and the lake warms to about 22°C (72°F) in August. Winters average 2-6°C (36-43°F), with occasional snow that rarely settles for long. The wettest months are May through August at 89-100 mm each, while February is the driest at 44.8 mm.
The full monthly numbers, with a comparison table, are in the Konstanz weather by month guide.

Konstanz Location and Climate Context
Konstanz lies in Germany’s far south, in Baden-Württemberg, on a peninsula between the Obersee and Untersee sections of Lake Constance. The lake, Europe’s third-largest by surface area at 536 km², stores summer heat into autumn and slows winter cooling, giving the city a temperate oceanic climate with roughly 1,750 sunshine hours a year. Foehn winds off the nearby Alps can push late-autumn temperatures briefly into the teens, but the lake is the dominant influence day to day.
