Baden-Baden

Baden-Baden is a German spa town of about 55,000 people in the Rhine valley at the foot of the Black Forest, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Twelve thermal springs rise from about 2,000 m below ground at up to 68°C and deliver around 800,000 liters a day, feeding two bathhouses, the casino town’s Kurhaus, and a medical-spa tradition that stretches back to the Romans. The climate is mild for Germany, averaging 10.8°C (51.4°F) and about 1,223 mm (48 in) of rain a year.

Location and Geography

Baden-Baden sits on the western edge of the Black Forest, where the Oos river leaves the hills for the Rhine plain, about 40 km south of Karlsruhe and roughly 180 km north of Basel. The hills shelter the town from the coldest continental air, which is why it’s often one of the warmest spots in the region. The Rhine and the border with France lie about 15 km west.
