May, June, and September offer the best balance of warm temperatures and manageable crowds. May averages 20°C (68°F) with 9 hours of daily sunshine and only 55 mm of rain. June hits 24°C (75°F) with 10 hours of sun and just 40 mm of rain. September keeps summer warmth at 24°C (75°F) and the sea is still 22°C (72°F), but the August holiday crowds have thinned out. November through February (excluding Christmas, New Year, and Grand Prix announcement week) offer the lowest hotel rates. December and January see daytime highs around 13°C (55°F) and more rain (70 to 90 mm per month), but you will pay 40 to 60% less for accommodation than in July. January, February, and November are the quietest months. The principality’s population of 39,000 swells significantly during summer and major events, but in these off-peak months you can walk through the Casino Square, the Rock of Monaco, and the Jardin Exotique without jostling for space. For the Monaco Grand Prix, the last weekend of May is the only option. Book hotels 12 months in advance if you want a trackside room. For the Monaco Yacht Show, visit in the last week of September. August is the worst month for crowds and prices, with much of France and Italy on annual holiday and hotel rates at their absolute peak. October brings the heaviest rainfall at 130 mm. Late May during Grand Prix weekend is chaotic if you are not attending the race: many roads are closed, restaurant reservations are impossible, and hotel prices are the highest of the year.
