Le Havre’s calendar is anchored by Un Été au Havre, a summer-long outdoor art festival that has run every year since 2017, when the city marked its 500th anniversary. Around it sit a Dixieland jazz festival, a maritime festival in the old port, and the biennial start of the Transat Jacques Vabre sailing race. Most events are free and open-air, which suits a city whose best spaces are its squares and seafront; the Le Havre weather by month page shows the driest months to plan around.
Le Havre Events and Festivals: Un Été au Havre
Un Été au Havre (A Summer in Le Havre) runs from roughly late June to mid-September. Each year a guest curator places large-scale contemporary artworks across the city, from the beach to the docks; past editions produced the Catène de containers and other permanent pieces. All the installations are free and mapped on a trail you can walk in a day. It is the single biggest reason to visit in summer, so check the programme before you book and time your trip with the best time to visit Le Havre guide.
Le Havre Events and Festivals: Dixie Days
Dixie Days brings New Orleans-style jazz to Le Havre every year in late May or early June, with free street concerts in the Saint-François quarter and ticketed evening shows. It has run for decades and draws brass bands from across Europe. If you are in town around the first weekend of June, the harbour quarter is the place to hear it. See the things to do in Le Havre guide for the Saint-François restaurants nearby.
Le Havre Events and Festivals: Fête de la Mer
The Fête de la Mer celebrates the city’s fishing and sailing heritage with tall ships, harbour tours, seafood stalls, and fireworks, usually over a weekend in July. Boats tie up in the Bassin du Roi and the surrounding quays, and many are open to visitors for free. It overlaps with Un Été au Havre, so a July visit lets you catch both. The seafront and the port are the venues; the Le Havre neighborhoods guide shows how the districts connect.
Le Havre Events and Festivals: Transat Jacques Vabre
Every two years in late October or early November, the Transat Jacques Vabre double-handed sailing race starts from Le Havre bound for the Caribbean and South America. The race village opens for about ten days before the start, with the boats moored where you can walk the pontoons and meet the crews. The next edition starts in late October 2027. Hotel rooms fill and rates rise for that week, so book early and plan with where to stay in Le Havre.
Le Havre Events and Festivals: Christmas and Winter
From late November, a Christmas market sets up around the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville with wooden chalets, mulled wine, and an ice rink, and the city lights run through New Year. It is modest compared with Strasbourg or Rouen, but the illuminated Perret facades make a good evening walk. For getting there in winter weather, the Le Havre travel tips page covers trains and ferries, and our Le Havre travel guide links every guide.
