Le Havre is a port city on the English Channel, rebuilt almost from scratch after World War II under the architect Auguste Perret, and its centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is France’s busiest container port, the town where Claude Monet grew up and painted the harbour scene that gave Impressionism its name, and the closest big city to the Étretat cliffs. Expect a mild, damp, maritime climate all year, with 21°C (70°F) summers, 8°C (46°F) winters, and about 790 mm of rain a year.

Welcome to Le Havre

Founded by King François I in 1517 as a deep-water harbour, Le Havre lost around 82% of its buildings and roughly 5,000 civilians to Allied bombing in September 1944. Perret’s rebuild, carried out from 1945 to 1964, replaced the ruined grid with wide boulevards and concrete buildings on a strict 6.24-metre module, and in 2005 UNESCO listed the centre as an outstanding example of postwar planning. Today the city of about 166,000 people is a working port with a growing cultural calendar led by the summer art festival Un Été au Havre.
