Metz sits in northeastern France, roughly 55 km (34 miles) from the German border and 60 km (37 miles) from Luxembourg, in the Moselle river valley. The city has a temperate oceanic climate with a clear continental edge: winters run cold and grey, summers stay mild to warm, and rain falls fairly evenly all year with no true dry season. Annual rainfall averages around 750 mm (30 in), spread over about 150 rainy days. The warmest month is July at a 20°C (68°F) daily average and the coldest is January at 3°C (37°F). For the full city picture, see our Metz city guide and use the figures below to pack for the season you are actually visiting.

Snow falls occasionally, but the Moselle valley rarely holds heavy snow for long. If you visit in these months, plan mostly indoor things to do in Metz around the museums and the cathedral.
