Metz, a city of about 118,000 people on the Moselle river in France’s Grand Est region, sits 55 km from the German border and 60 km from Luxembourg. Its Gothic cathedral holds one of the largest expanses of stained glass in Europe, the Centre Pompidou-Metz anchors a fast-growing modern quarter, and a German imperial district built after 1871 gives the city a look unlike anywhere else in France. Summers are mild at 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F) and winters cold and grey at around 3°C (37°F). Welcome to Metz: Weather at a Glance

Metz has a temperate oceanic climate with a continental influence from its inland position. July is the warmest month, averaging 20°C (68°F) and peaking at 24°C (75°F) daytime highs with 8 hours of sun. January is the coldest at a 3°C (37°F) average and only 1 hour of daily sun. Rain falls every month, from a low of about 53 mm in April to 78 mm in December, and totals around 750 mm a year. The Moselle valley rarely sees extremes, and the summer season is defined by the free Constellations de Metz light festival.

What to Do in Metz

Start at the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, free to enter, with its 41.4-metre nave and 6,500 square metres of stained glass by medieval masters and by Marc Chagall. Walk to the Porte des Allemands, then through the Quartier Impérial to the Centre Pompidou-Metz, whose timber-lattice roof is as famous as the art inside. Save the covered market for a mirabelle plum or a madeleine, and in summer follow the free Constellations video mapping at night.
