Hamburg Events and Festivals

Germany › Hamburg › Hamburg

Hamburg’s event calendar is anchored by the Hafengeburtstag (Harbor Birthday) in May, three major funfairs (Dom) spread across the year, and a Christmas market scene that fills the city from late November. Here’s the full annual calendar with specific dates and practical details.

Hamburg Events and Festivals: Annual Calendar

Hamburger Dom (Spring: Late March to Late April)

Hamburg’s largest funfair runs three times annually. The Spring Dom operates for 30 days from late March through late April at Heiligengeistfeld in St. Pauli, just south of the Reeperbahn. It features 250+ rides, games, and food stalls. Entry is free; individual ride tickets cost €3-8.

Every Wednesday is family day with reduced prices. The Dom has operated since 1329, making it Northern Germany’s oldest fair. S-Bahn: Reeperbahn or Feldstrasse. Open Monday-Thursday 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Friday-Saturday 3:00 PM to midnight, Sunday 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Hafengeburtstag Hamburg (Harbor Birthday, Second Weekend of May)

Hamburg’s largest annual festival marks the anniversary of the port’s founding in 1189. Running Friday to Sunday around the second weekend of May, it draws 1.5 million visitors. The program includes 300+ ships (tall ships, naval vessels, cruise ships) parading along the Elbe, tugboat ballet (synchronized spinning tugboats), open ship tours, fireworks on Saturday night at 10:30 PM, and live music stages along the Landungsbrücken and the HafenCity.

Free entry to the festival grounds. Food and drink stands line the waterfront. Book hotels 4-6 months ahead; the entire city fills up. Check best time to visit Hamburg for weather expectations (May averages 17°C / 63°F).

Elbjazz Festival (First Weekend of June)

A two-day jazz festival held across the Blohm+Voss shipyard and other venues in the HafenCity. The industrial backdrop of the shipyard against the Elbe creates a unique concert setting. Weekend tickets cost €120-150; individual day tickets are available. The lineup blends international jazz headliners with electronic and pop acts. Approximately 25,000 attendees. Book tickets in February or March.

Schlagermove (Second Saturday of July)

A parade and street party celebrating German Schlager music (1970s German pop), with 500,000 attendees dressing in 1970s costumes and dancing along a 5 km parade route through St. Pauli. The parade runs from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, followed by after-parties at venues across the Reeperbahn. It’s loud, kitschy, and unapologetically German. Free to attend.

Hamburger Dom (Summer: Late July to Late August)

The Summer Dom runs for 30 days from the last Friday in July through late August at Heiligengeistfeld. The same format as the Spring Dom: 250+ rides, free entry, pay per ride. The summer edition coincides with the German school holidays, making it the busiest of the three Dom events. The Friday night fireworks display (10:30 PM) is a summer highlight.

Alstervergnügen (First Weekend of September)

A three-day festival around the Binnenalster lake featuring food stalls, live music, street performers, and water-based entertainment. The Saturday night firework display over the Alster (10:00 PM) is the centerpiece. Free entry. The festival runs Friday to Sunday, ending the outdoor summer season. Around 400,000 attendees.

Reeperbahn Festival (Third Week of September)

Germany’s largest club festival, running Wednesday to Saturday in mid-September. 600+ concerts across 90+ venues in and around the Reeperbahn, plus an industry conference for music professionals. The program spans indie, rock, electronic, hip-hop, and pop. A 2-day pass costs €70-80; a 4-day pass costs €90-120. Venues range from established clubs (Molotow, Docks, Grosse Freiheit 36) to pop-up spaces in church crypts and parking garages.

Hamburger Dom (Winter: Early November to Early December)

The Winter Dom runs for 30 days from early November through early December at Heiligengeistfeld. This edition adds mulled wine, roasted almonds, and Christmas-themed rides. It ends before the Christmas markets reach full swing. Free entry, pay per ride.

Hamburg Christmas Markets (Late November to December 23)

Hamburg runs 30+ Christmas markets simultaneously. The main ones: the Rathausmarkt Christmas Market (in front of City Hall, with flying Santa sleigh overhead, the largest and most touristy); the St. Pauli Christmas Market (Spielbudenplatz, an adult-oriented market with themed stalls selling cocktails and condoms alongside crafts); the Jungfernstieg Christmas Market (along the Alster, upscale); and the Fleetinsel Market (on a canal island, quieter and more local).

Markets open around the third week of November and close December 23. Hours: Sunday to Thursday 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday until 10:00 PM. Mulled wine (Glühwein) costs €3.50-5.00 plus a €3-5 deposit for the ceramic mug. Our Hamburg weather by month data shows December averages 5°C (41°F) with 67mm of rain, so dress warmly and in waterproof layers.
