Croatia has a Mediterranean climate along the Adriatic coast and a continental climate inland. Dubrovnik and Split average 8°C in January and 26°C in July, with the swimming season running May to October (sea temperatures reach 25°C in August). The Dalmatian coast receives 2,600 sunshine hours annually, among the highest in Europe. The Bora wind can bring sudden cold gusts to the Adriatic in winter and spring, particularly around the Velebit Channel. Zagreb and inland Croatia have cold winters (averaging -1°C) and warm summers (22°C), with snow common from December to February. Plitvice Lakes are spectacular year-round but most accessible from April to October; winter visits offer frozen waterfalls but some trails close. July and August are peak season on the coast with the highest prices and crowds; May, June, and September offer the best balance.
