Aranjuez runs two signature festivals each year, both tied to its royal history, plus a spring music season and winter carnival. Dates shift slightly year to year, so confirm on the town hall website before you travel. Here is what to expect.

Events and Festivals in Aranjuez: Fiestas de San Fernando (Late May)

The patron saint festival honors King Fernando III around May 27 to 31, centered on May 30. Expect an opening proclamation, a children’s running of the bulls, neighborhood parties, a procession, a bullfight in the Plaza de Toros, and fireworks to close. Over fifty cultural, sport, and music events run across the five days. This is the busiest time for local visitors, so book hotels early if you want to be in town for it; the where to stay guide lists the best bases.

Events and Festivals in Aranjuez: Fiestas del Motin (Early September)

The Fiestas del Motin de Aranjuez, held the first week of September (about September 2 to 6), reenacts the March 1808 uprising that forced the fall of minister Godoy and the abdication of Carlos IV. It has been a National Tourist Interest festival since 1990 and International since 2014. Highlights are the costumed assault on Godoy’s house, street scenes with more than 170 residents in period dress, concerts, and the Descenso Pirata del Tajo, a pirate-themed river descent. The weather is usually dry and warm, so pair it with a palace visit, as outlined in our things to do guide and the Aranjuez city guide.

Events and Festivals in Aranjuez: Festival de Musica Antigua (May to June)

The early music festival runs on weekends through May and June, held in the Plaza de San Antonio and across the royal gardens. The Paseos Musicales guided walks combine a garden tour with live early music stops. Concerts are mostly free or low-cost and seated outdoors, so bring a layer for the evening, when temperatures fall to around 12 to 15Β°C (54 to 59Β°F) in May. Check the weather by month guide for evening temperatures, and the travel tips guide for what to pack.

Events and Festivals in Aranjuez: Carnavales and Seasonal Markets

Carnavales fills the last days of February with parades and costume contests, a warm-up before the main season. In spring and around Christmas the old town hosts street markets, and the strawberry harvest in April and May brings tastings and a seasonal market where you can buy Aranjuez’s famous strawberries and asparagus direct from growers.
