Surat has a tropical savanna climate (Koppen Aw) shaped by its position at 21.17°N on the Tapti River, roughly 20 km inland from the Arabian Sea. The city swings between two extremes: a long, dry season that peaks with 40°C (104°F) heat in April and May, and a three-month monsoon from June to September that delivers about 95% of the year’s 1,180 mm of rain. If you’re planning a trip, the best time to visit guide explains which months actually feel comfortable, and our things to do roundup covers the indoor attractions that work even in the July humidity.

Surat Weather by Month: Temperatures and Rainfall Overview

The annual temperature range is narrow but the rainfall range is extreme. December and January bring the coolest nights at 15°C (59°F), while May is the hottest month with average highs of 38°C (100°F) and afternoon peaks touching 42°C (108°F). July alone records about 440 mm of rain, against just 1 to 2 mm in January, February, March, April, and December. Sea breezes from the Gulf of Khambhat take the edge off coastal areas like Dumas, but the city core 20 km inland stays noticeably hotter and more humid. Our neighborhoods guide maps the main districts.

Surat Weather by Month: Winter (November to February)

Winter is the dry, mild season and the reason most visitors pick these months. November still feels warm with highs of 34°C (93°C) and lows near 19°C (66°F), but by January the highs settle at 30°C (86°F) and nights drop to 15°C (59°F), occasionally to 11°C (52°F) during cold snaps. Humidity falls to 40 to 50%, so the heat feels far less oppressive than in summer. Rainfall is near zero, and skies stay clear, which makes January the best month for the things to do list of outdoor attractions and riverfront walks. Our travel tips page has the practical details.

Surat Weather by Month: Summer (March to May)

Summer is the punishing season. March warms to 36°C (97°F) highs, and by April and May the average high holds at 38°C (100°F) with frequent 42°C (108°F) afternoons. Nights offer little relief, staying at 25 to 27°C (77 to 81°F) in May. April and May are the driest months of the year at 1 mm and 5 mm of rain respectively, and hot, dusty winds can make outdoor sightseeing uncomfortable after 11:00. If you’re here in May, plan activities before 10:00 or after 17:00, and book a hotel with a pool, which our where to stay guide covers in detail.

Surat Weather by Month: Monsoon (June to September)

The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the second week of June and runs through late September. June starts with 200 mm of rain and temperatures still high at 34°C (93°F). July is the wettest month at about 440 mm, with highs easing to 31°C (88°F) but relative humidity stuck at 85 to 90%. August adds roughly 280 mm and September another 200 mm. Heavy downpours flood low-lying areas near the Tapti River, and streets can stay waterlogged for hours. Pack a raincoat and waterproof footwear, and check the events and festivals page for the indoor museums and malls that stay open through downpours.

Surat Weather by Month: October (Post-Monsoon)

October is the transition month. The first half still sees retreating-monsoon showers totalling about 40 mm, while the second half dries out and heats back up to 35°C (95°F). Humidity lingers around 65 to 70%, so evenings stay sticky until early November. Navratri, Gujarat’s biggest festival, usually lands in October, and the weather is warm enough for all-night garba dancing outdoors, which you can read about in our where to stay calendar. Surat Weather by Month: Humidity, Sunshine and Sea Conditions

Relative humidity follows the monsoon: 40 to 50% in winter, 65 to 75% in October and early June, and 85 to 90% from July through September. Sunshine hours drop from about 10 per day in December to 3 to 4 in July, when cloud cover sits overhead most of the day. The nearest beach, Dumas, is on the Gulf of Khambhat rather than open ocean, so there’s no real surf season; the sea stays warm at 26 to 29°C (79 to 84°F) year-round but swimming is only comfortable outside the monsoon, when the water is cleaner.
