Surat is Gujarat’s second city and one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres, a diamond-cutting and textile powerhouse of about 6.5 million people on the Tapti River, 20 km inland from the Gulf of Khambhat. The climate is tropical and lopsided: a long dry season that peaks at 42°C (108°F) in May, then a three-month monsoon that dumps nearly all of the year’s 1,180 mm of rain between June and September. For most visitors the usable window is November to February, when nights cool to 15°C (59°F) and rain is close to zero. Use the guides below to plan by month, pick a neighbourhood, and book a hotel.

Surat’s Climate at a Glance

Surat runs on two gears. From October to May the sky stays mostly clear, humidity drops from 70% to about 40%, and temperatures climb from a mild 31°C (88°F) in December to a punishing 38°C (100°F) average in April and May. Then the southwest monsoon arrives in the second week of June and flips the city: July records roughly 440 mm of rain, relative humidity sits at 85 to 90%, and daily highs ease to 31°C (88°F) while the streets flood in low-lying areas. The full month-by-month numbers, including rainy days and sunshine hours, are in the Surat weather by month guide.

Because Surat sits inland from the coast, the Gulf of Khambhat only partly moderates its heat. Dumas Beach and the southern Dumas Road corridor catch a sea breeze and run a degree or two cooler than the old city, which matters in April and May when every degree counts. The city’s rapid growth has also strengthened its heat-island effect, so newer concrete belts like Vesu and City Light hold heat longer into the evening than the tree-lined riverside lanes.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Winter (November to February): The best season. Highs of 30 to 34°C (86 to 93°F), lows of 15 to 19°C (59 to 66°F), near-zero rain. Peak hotel prices around Diwali and Uttarayan.
  • Summer (March to May): Hot and dry. March warms to 36°C (97°F), and April to May average 38°C (100°F) with 42°C (108°F) afternoons. Lowest prices, empty attractions.
  • Monsoon (June to September): Wet. 200 mm in June, 440 mm in July, 280 mm in August, 200 mm in September. Flooding, flight delays, high humidity.
  • Post-monsoon (October): Transition. About 40 mm of rain early in the month, then drying and warming to 35°C (95°F). Navratri garba dominates the calendar.

Where Surat Sits

Surat is the largest city in southern Gujarat, on the south bank of the Tapti River where it meets the Arabian Sea, about 265 km north of Mumbai and 230 km south of Ahmedabad. Its position on the Gulf of Khambhat, behind the Hazira industrial belt, means the sea moderates coastal areas but not the dense inland core. The city’s famous diamond industry, which cuts roughly 90% of the world’s diamonds, and its textile mills both draw steady business travel year-round, so hotels stay fuller than you might expect for a city without a classic tourist trail.
