Leshan is compact and easy to navigate, with most visitors splitting their time between the Shizhong District city centre and the Giant Buddha scenic area on the southeast riverbank. This guide breaks down each area by what it offers, who it suits and roughly what hotels cost. For the temperatures to expect in each season, see the Leshan weather by month page.

Leshan Neighborhoods: Central and Riverfront Districts

Shizhong District (City Centre)

The Shizhong District is Leshan’s commercial core, running north from the old town along Jiading Road and Baiyang Road. It holds the main shopping streets, most restaurants and the largest concentration of chain hotels, including the HUALUXE and Hilton Garden Inn. It suits first-time visitors who want easy access to food and transport; the Giant Buddha is about 10km southeast. Budget hotels here run roughly 150 to 250 RMB a night and mid-range 300 to 450 RMB. Prices peak in October, so check the best time to visit Leshan guide before booking.

Old Town and River Confluence

The historic core clusters around the confluence of the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers, near the Leshan Museum and the old city wall remnants. Narrow lanes hold tea houses and restaurants serving Leshan specialties like boboji skewers and sweet-skin duck. It is the most atmospheric area to stay or eat, and it suits travellers who want to walk to the riverside promenade, where several annual festivals are held. Rooms skew to guesthouses and small hotels at 120 to 300 RMB a night.

Giant Buddha Scenic Area (Lingyun and Wuyou)

This area wraps around Lingyun Mountain and Wuyou Island on the southeast bank of the Min River, immediately around the Buddha. Staying here means a short walk to the ticket gate, which is a real advantage for beating the 07:30 opening. Options are mostly mid-range hotels and boutique guesthouses at 200 to 400 RMB a night, with a handful of homestays. It suits visitors whose entire Leshan plan centres on the things to do at the scenic area.

Leshan Neighborhoods: The Rail Gateway and Surrounding Districts

High-Speed Rail Station Area

Leshan Station, on the Chengdu to Guiyang high-speed line, sits north of the city centre and is the arrival point for most travellers. The area around it is newer and quieter, with chain hotels like the Holiday Inn Express aimed at people catching early trains or arriving late. It suits one-night stopovers and business travellers rather than sightseers, since the Buddha is 10km away. Rooms run 200 to 350 RMB a night. For the bigger picture, see the Leshan guide.

Wutongqiao District

Wutongqiao lies about 20km south of the centre along the Min River and is known locally for its tofu pudding and quieter riverside scenery. Few foreign visitors stay here, but it is a genuine slice of small-town Sichuan for travellers with extra time and a car or taxi budget.
