The best time to visit Leshan is a narrow spring window from mid-March to early May, or the autumn stretch from late September to early November. Both offer daytime temperatures of 16°C to 26°C (61°F to 79°F), manageable rainfall and far smaller crowds than the summer and October holiday peaks. This guide breaks down each season with specific dates, prices and events. It is part of our full Leshan guide.
Best Time to Visit Leshan: Spring (March to May)
April and May are the single best months. Highs run 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) and rain is a moderate 85 to 105mm, mostly short showers. The Buddha area is greenest in April, and hotel rates are still in the shoulder-season band before the summer rush. Avoid the first week of May: Labour Day (May 1 to 5) floods the Giant Buddha with domestic tourists. For a monthly temperature breakdown, see the Leshan weather by month page.
Best Time to Visit Leshan: Autumn (September to November)
Late September through early November is the second prime window. September is still warm and wet (26°C, 132mm), but October drops to 21°C (70°F) with 60mm and clear, cool days. Do not book October 1 to 7: National Day Golden Week brings the largest crowds of the year to the things to do in Leshan, with multi-hour queues at the plank road. Wait until October 8 and you get the same weather with a fraction of the visitors.
Best Time to Visit Leshan: Summer (June to August)
Summer is the worst season for comfort and value. July and August average 31°C (88°F) highs, 81% humidity and 256 to 296mm of rain, with heavy downpours that can close the riverside paths. The Giant Buddha is also at its busiest during the mid-July to late-August school holidays. If summer is your only option, go in June (before the holiday peak) and start at 07:30 when the gate opens. For train and airport logistics, see the Leshan travel tips guide.
Best Time to Visit Leshan: Winter (December to February)
Winter is the cheapest and quietest time to visit, with January averaging 10°C (50°F) highs and just 14mm of rain. You will trade that for fog: the Sichuan Basin averages only about 2 hours of sunshine a day in December and January, which can wash out the classic Buddha photos. The one big exception is Chinese New Year (late January to mid-February), when the city fills with domestic visitors and temple fairs. If your dates overlap a public holiday, check the Leshan events and festivals calendar first.
Best Time to Visit Leshan: Price and Crowd Summary
Hotel prices in Leshan swing sharply with demand. Budget rooms in the Shizhong District run roughly 150 to 250 RMB a night in winter and climb to 300 to 500 RMB during Golden Week and summer weekends. The where to stay in Leshan guide lists specific hotels by area and tier. To dodge both crowds and high rates, target the second half of April or the second half of October, which combine the best weather with shoulder-season pricing. For orientation on where to base yourself, read the Leshan neighborhoods guide.
