Fremantle’s calendar is built around a world-class street arts festival at Easter, a fishing fleet blessing in October and a run of smaller markets and music series through the warmer months. Because the city is compact, almost every event happens within walking distance of the town centre. Here are the key Fremantle events and festivals to plan a trip around, as part of our Fremantle travel guide.

Fremantle Events and Festivals: The Annual Headliners

Fremantle International Street Arts Festival

Held over the Easter long weekend, this is one of the largest street performance festivals in the world and the single busiest weekend on Fremantle’s calendar. Buskers, acrobats and theatre acts fill the West End, Esplanade and Kings Square, and most performances are free with a passing-the-hat donation. Book accommodation months ahead, since the city sells out.

Blessing of the Fleet

The Blessing of the Fleet runs on a Sunday in late October and dates back to Fremantle’s Italian and Portuguese fishing communities. Decorated boats process through Fishing Boat Harbour for a blessing, followed by a procession, live music and food stalls along Mews Road. It is a family event and free to attend, and the harbour restaurants fill up fast, so book a table early.

Fremantle Heritage Festival

Each May the Fremantle Heritage Festival opens buildings that are normally closed, including the old prison hospital, warehouses and private heritage homes. Tours, talks and exhibitions run across roughly two weeks, with many events free or a few dollars. It is the best chance to get inside Fremantle’s backstreets without a ticket.

Fremantle Events and Festivals: Markets and Music

Bathers Beach Sunset Markets

From November to April, the Bathers Beach Sunset Markets run every Saturday evening from about 5:00pm to 9:00pm on the grass and sand below the Round House. Food trucks, crafts and live music sit against the ocean sunset. It is free, casual and a good lead-in to dinner at Fishing Boat Harbour.

Fremantle Arts Centre Sunday Music

The Arts Centre’s free Sunday music sessions run October to March in the courtyard garden, with local acts from about 2:00pm. Bring a rug, buy food from the on-site cafe and treat it as a low-key afternoon. It is a favourite with families and finishes before the evening cools down.

Fremantle Running Festival

Each November the Fremantle Running Festival sends runners past the port, beaches and heritage streets, with distances from 5km up to a half marathon. The course finishes near the Esplanade and draws a few thousand entrants. Even if you do not run, expect road closures in the town centre that morning.

Fremantle Events and Festivals: Planning Around Them

The Easter street arts festival and the October blessing are the two events that move hotel prices, so avoid those weekends unless the event is your reason for coming. Every other event on this list is easy to catch on a normal visit. The things to do in Fremantle guide fills the days between events, and the Fremantle neighbourhoods guide helps you stay near the action.
