Fremantle is Western Australia’s port city at the mouth of the Swan River, 20km southwest of Perth, with a Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers, mild wet winters and a cooling afternoon sea breeze locals call the Fremantle Doctor. It is best known for the UNESCO-listed Fremantle Prison, a 19th-century market hall, working breweries and a run of beaches that stretch toward the Rottnest Island ferry. This Fremantle travel guide brings together the weather, the best time to go, what to do and where to stay.

The city works for a short break and for a longer Western Australia base. You can walk the heritage West End and the markets in a morning, spend the afternoon on the beach or the Rottnest ferry, and be back for dinner on the Cappuccino Strip. Because the climate is mild at both ends of the year, it is also one of the few Australian cities where the shoulder months are genuinely the best time to go.

Fremantle Weather at a Glance

Fremantle averages about 850mm of rain a year and roughly 3,200 hours of sunshine, making it one of the sunniest corners of Australia. January is the hottest month with an average high of 31°C (88°F), while July is the coolest at 18°C (64°F). Almost 80% of the rain falls between May and August, and the six months from November to April are reliably dry.

The sea breeze that Fremantle is famous for arrives most summer afternoons between 1pm and 3pm, knocking a few degrees off the temperature and making the coast cooler than inland Perth. Sea temperatures run from 19°C (66°F) in winter to 23°C (73°F) in February, warm enough for swimming from December to April.

Sunshine is the other draw, roughly 3,200 hours a year and enough that even the winter months average about six hours of sun a day between the fronts. The practical result is two good weather windows, March to May and September to November, when days are warm, rain is light and the beaches are quieter than in the January school-holiday rush.

Seasonal Snapshot in Fremantle

  • Summer (December to February): 29 to 31°C (84 to 88°F) days, 10 to 13mm of rain a month, busy beaches and peak hotel prices.
  • Autumn (March to May): 22 to 30°C (72 to 86°F), rain building from 20mm in March to 118mm in May, warm sea and falling prices.
  • Winter (June to August): 18 to 19°C (64 to 66°F) days with 134 to 178mm of rain a month, cold fronts, and the cheapest rates.
  • Spring (September to November): 20 to 26°C (68 to 79°F), rain easing from 80mm to 22mm, clear days and the markets in full swing.

Where Fremantle Sits and What Shapes Its Climate

Fremantle sits at the mouth of the Swan River, where the river meets the Indian Ocean about 20km southwest of Perth’s city centre. Its Mediterranean climate comes from the subtropical high-pressure belt that sits over southern Australia in summer, keeping skies clear, and the band of winter cold fronts that roll off the Indian Ocean between May and August. Being on the coast, Fremantle is a couple of degrees cooler than Perth in summer and a touch warmer in winter.

The defining feature is the Fremantle Doctor, the south-westerly sea breeze that builds over the ocean and hits the coast most afternoons between 1pm and 3pm from November to March. It is strong enough to keep kite surfers busy off Port Beach and to take the edge off a 31°C (88°F) day. Because the breeze arrives from the south-west, the northern river beaches feel it first, which is why locals talk about the wind almost as much as the temperature.

Where to Stay in Fremantle

Fremantle’s accommodation clusters in three zones. The CBD and West End put the markets, prison and nightlife within a 10-minute walk and hold the biggest choice of hotels. The harbour side around Bathers Beach trades a little centrality for water views and apartments, and North and East Fremantle offer a quiet riverside base with easy parking. Rates run roughly A$180 to A$350 a night in the centre and A$150 to A$300 along the river.

Hotel prices follow the seasons closely: the same room that costs around A$300 in January often drops to A$180 in July, so the shoulder months of March to May and September to November are the best value with good weather. Families tend toward the self-contained apartments along the harbour, couples toward the boutique hotels of the West End, and budget travellers toward the prison hostel and pub stays.
