Ávila’s event calendar revolves around its religious calendar, a September medieval market and its patron-saint feasts. Most events are free to watch and take place in the walled old town, which means they are easy to reach on foot. Dates below are the typical timing, and the Ávila guide hub ties it all together.

Ávila Events and Festivals: Semana Santa (Holy Week)

Semana Santa, the week before Easter Sunday (mid-March to late April depending on the year), is Ávila’s biggest event. Processions of hooded penitents wind through the old town at night, carrying carved pasos from the cathedral and local churches. The processions were declared of Regional Tourist Interest. Hotels sell out, so book through the where to stay in Ávila guide 2 to 3 months ahead.

Ávila Events and Festivals: Mercado Medieval de las Tres Culturas

On the first weekend of September, the streets around the Plaza del Mercado Chico transform into a medieval market with more than 300 stalls selling crafts, food and falconry displays. The event celebrates the city’s Jewish, Christian and Muslim past, and draws large crowds on Saturday and Sunday. Most activities are free, and the market runs roughly 11:00 to 23:00. The Ávila neighborhoods guide maps the old town where it takes place.

Ávila Events and Festivals: Fiestas de Santa Teresa

The feast of St. Teresa of Ávila, Spain’s patron saint of writers, falls on October 15, with events running the week around it. Expect open-air concerts, street theatre, a procession with the saint’s statue, and free entry to several monuments. The Mercado Grande hosts food stalls, and fireworks close the week. The saint’s sites are listed in the things to do in Ávila guide.

Ávila Events and Festivals: Spring and Summer Feasts

San Segundo (May 2)

On the first weekend of May, the city honors San Segundo, its first bishop and co-patron saint, with a pilgrimage to the Hermitage of San Segundo across the Adaja river. Families walk out with bread and cheese, and there are food stalls and games by the riverbank. It is a local rather than tourist event, which makes it a relaxed day to be in town.

Romería de la Virgen de Sonsoles (early July)

On the first Sunday of July, the city walks 6 km to the Sanctuary of Sonsoles, the patronal shrine of Ávila, in one of the largest romerías of Castile and León. The route leaves from the old town in the morning, and the day ends with picnics and dancing around the sanctuary. Check the Ávila weather by month guide for July conditions before you walk.

Carnaval (February)

In February, Ávila holds a modest carnival with a costume parade, children’s workshops and a burial of the sardine on Ash Wednesday. Dates follow the lunar calendar. It is a smaller, family-oriented event compared with southern Spain. Check the best time to visit Ávila guide for how the dates fit your trip, and the Ávila travel tips guide for getting around.
