Ávila is a walled city on a granite plateau 1,131 m (3,711 ft) above sea level, the highest provincial capital in Spain and a UNESCO World Heritage site. That altitude shapes everything from the climate to the food, and this hub ties together the weather by month and things to do guides so you can plan the whole trip in one place.
Welcome to Ávila
Ávila is best known for its Muralla, a 2.5 km ring of walls with 88 towers and 9 gates that is the best-preserved in Spain. Inside them sits a compact old town holding the first Gothic cathedral in the country, the birthplace of St. Teresa and a handful of granite Renaissance palaces. The city works as a day trip from Madrid, 88 km away by train, but rewards an overnight stay when the day-trippers leave and the walls are lit after dark.
