Cuenca is small enough that where you stay comes down to one choice: the hilltop old town or the flat modern centre below it. The old town puts the cathedral and the hanging houses on your doorstep but means steep streets and higher prices; the centre is cheaper and flatter but a 15 to 20-minute uphill walk or a short bus ride from the sights. Both are covered below with three hotels each. For what to see once you are there, read our things to do in Cuenca guide.

Where to Stay in Cuenca: Casco Antiguo (Old Town)

The Casco Antiguo is the UNESCO-listed ridge-top district, and staying here means rolling out of bed into the city’s best views. You trade convenience for hills: the streets are steep, cobbled and mostly pedestrian, and driving in is restricted, so check parking with your hotel, and read our Cuenca travel tips for getting around. Rates are the highest in the city, especially during Holy Week and San Mateo, in our Cuenca events and festivals guide.

Suggested Hotels in the Casco Antiguo

Parador de Cuenca

The Parador de Cuenca occupies a converted 16th-century convent of San Pablo, set on the cliff opposite the hanging houses with a terrace directly over the Huécar gorge. Best for couples and anyone who wants the iconic bridge-to-hanging-houses view from their room. Check rates and availability

Hotel Convento del Giraldo

Set in a 17th-century building on Calle San Pedro, this four-star hotel sits a two-minute walk from Plaza Mayor and the cathedral. Best for first-time visitors who want to stay inside the old town at a mid-range price. Check rates and availability

Posada San José

A two-star guesthouse on Calle Julián Romero with panoramic views of the Huécar gorge and a traditional restaurant, rated 8.9 by recent guests. Best for budget travellers and solo visitors who want old-town character without the hotel bill. Check rates and availability

Where to Stay in Cuenca: Centro (Modern City Centre)

The Centro is the flat lower city, where most residents live and where the mid-range chains cluster. You get easier parking, lower prices and quick access to the main shopping streets, at the cost of a 15 to 20-minute climb or a bus ride to the old town. The lower city is a couple of degrees warmer in winter, as our Cuenca weather by month guide notes. This is the better base if you have a car or want a modern, predictable room.

Suggested Hotels in the Centro

Hotel Torremangana

A four-star hotel on Avenida San Ignacio de Loyola that borders the Júcar river, directly below the old town and beside the riverside paths. Best for travellers with a car who want easy access and a walkable climb up to the sights. Check rates and availability

NH Ciudad de Cuenca

A four-star NH on Ronda de San José with a fitness centre, a Mediterranean restaurant serving La Mancha specialities and rooms a five-minute drive from the historic centre. Best for business travellers and families who prefer a modern chain with nearby parking. Check rates and availability

A four-star hotel on Avenida Juan Carlos I with 24-hour reception, free Wi-Fi and direct access to the N-400 toward Madrid. Best for budget-conscious travellers and road-trippers who want a reliable base in the lower city. Check rates and availability

Where to Stay in Cuenca: Choosing Your Area

If you have one or two nights and want the postcard experience, pay the premium for the old town. If you are driving through, staying longer or watching your budget, the Centro is the practical choice, and the city buses make the hill a non-issue.
