Cuenca sits on a limestone ridge 956 metres above sea level in the Serranía de Cuenca, roughly 165 km southeast of Madrid. That altitude is the single biggest factor in its climate: the city has a continental Mediterranean profile with cold, frosty winters and hot, dry summers, and a swing of almost 19°C between the average January low and the average July high. Annual rainfall is 501 mm, but it falls unevenly, with less than 20 mm in a typical July and over 55 mm in April, October and December. This guide breaks down what to expect every month so you can pack for the right season, and links to our best time to visit Cuenca guide if you want the short answer on when to go.

Cuenca Weather by Month: Climate Overview

Cuenca is one of the colder provincial capitals in central Spain because of its height. The average annual temperature is 13.1°C (56°F), compared with 15°C in Madrid 165 km to the northwest. Frost is common: January averages 17.8 days with a temperature at or below 0°C, and snow falls on about 2 days in both January and February. Summers are the opposite extreme. July averages 23.6°C (74°F) with a typical daytime high of 31.4°C (89°F) and only 10 mm of rain, and the city records around 357 hours of sunshine in that month alone. The wettest month is October at 60 mm, followed by April and December at 58 mm each. See the full things to do in Cuenca for how the seasons shape what is open.

Cuenca Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold and the skies clear quickly after any snowfall. January is the coldest month, averaging 4.6°C (40°F) with a high of 9.7°C (49°F) and a low of -0.5°C (31°F). December averages 5.4°C (42°F) and February 5.9°C (43°F). Night-time frost is routine: January has 17.8 frost days, December 14.6 and February 13.7. Snow is light but real, averaging 2.3 days in January, 2.0 in February and 1.3 in December, and it usually melts within a day or two at street level. Rainfall is moderate, 40 mm in January, 38 mm in February and 58 mm in December. Bring a warm coat, gloves and waterproof shoes, and note that the upper old town feels several degrees colder than the lower modern city because of the exposed ridge and the wind channelled through the Huécar gorge. Cuenca Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring warms up fast and is the rainiest stretch of the year together with autumn. March averages 8.8°C (48°F) with a high of 15.1°C (59°F), April 10.6°C (51°F) with a high of 16.6°C (62°F), and May 14.6°C (58°F) with a high of 20.9°C (70°F). April is the third-wettest month at 58 mm and May brings 52 mm, so pack a compact umbrella. Sunshine climbs from 211 hours in March to 258 in May. This is the season when the gorges around the old town turn green and the outdoor terraces reopen, and it coincides with Cuenca Holy Week, whose dates shift between late March and mid April. Check the Cuenca events and festivals calendar before booking, since hotels fill weeks in advance for the Good Friday procession.

Cuenca Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot, dry and very sunny, but the high altitude keeps nights comfortable. July is the warmest month at 23.6°C (74°F) with a daytime high of 31.4°C (89°F) and a low of 15.7°C (60°F). August is nearly identical at 23.2°C (74°F), high 30.7°C (87°F). Rain almost disappears: July records just 10 mm and August 20 mm, and July averages 357 hours of sunshine, the highest of the year. Heat waves can push daytime highs past 34°C in July and August, so plan sightseeing for the morning and evening and avoid the exposed Plaza Mayor at midday. Evenings cool to the mid-teens, so you will still want a light layer after dark. If you want the full attraction list for hot days, read our things to do in Cuenca article, which flags the air-conditioned museums.

Cuenca Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

Autumn cools down and the rain returns, peaking in October. September still feels like late summer at 18.8°C (66°F) with a high of 25.6°C (78°F). Frost begins to return in November, averaging 6.5 days. September is when the city hosts its biggest festival, San Mateo, and the weather is usually dry and mild for it. By November the daylight shortens to around 151 hours of sun for the month, so bring a warm layer if you visit for the best time to visit advice we lay out separately.
