Kitakyushu is compact and easy to navigate once you know the two transport spines: JR Kokura Station for intercity trains and the Kitakyushu Monorail for getting around town. Here are the practical tips and the answers to the questions visitors ask most. For where to stay, see the where to stay in Kitakyushu guide, and for the overview, the Kitakyushu city guide.

Getting to Kitakyushu

Kitakyushu Airport (KKJ) is an artificial island airport about 20 km northeast of the city and the main base of the budget carrier StarFlyer, with flights to Tokyo Haneda and a handful of international routes including Seoul and Busan. A Nishitetsu airport bus runs to Kokura Station Bus Center in about 40 minutes for 710 yen, with departures every 20 to 30 minutes. There is no rail link to the airport. By train, Kokura Station is a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, about 15 minutes from Hakata (Fukuoka) and roughly five hours from Tokyo on a Nozomi.

Getting Around Kitakyushu

The Kitakyushu Monorail runs from Kokura south to Kikugaoka via the castle and Tanga Market, with single fares from 100 to 380 yen depending on distance. For Moji, take the JR Kagoshima Line from Kokura to Mojiko Station in about 15 minutes. A one-day pass covering the monorail and city buses costs around 700 yen and pays off after three or four rides. Taxis are plentiful at Kokura Station, and most central sights are within a 20-minute walk of the station, including the first stops on the things to do in Kitakyushu list. The Kitakyushu events and festivals calendar is also clustered near the station.

Kitakyushu Travel Tips: Money, Visas and Safety

  • Cash is still needed at Tanga Market stalls and small shops, though hotels and major attractions take cards. The 7-Eleven and Lawson ATMs around Kokura Station accept foreign cards.
  • Japan offers visa-free entry to citizens of the UK, US, Canada, Australia, the EU and many other countries for 90 days, but check current rules for your passport before you travel.
  • Tipping is not expected anywhere in Japan, including Kitakyushu. Round up a taxi fare only if you want to, and no one will wait for a tip.
  • Kitakyushu is a safe city with low crime. Standard precautions apply late at night around Kokura Station, and the biggest practical risk in summer is the heat and typhoons, not crime.
  • Tap water is safe to drink throughout Kitakyushu, and free water is served with meals.

Kitakyushu Travel Tips FAQ

Is Kitakyushu worth visiting, or should I just go to Fukuoka?

Kitakyushu is worth a full day or an overnight stop, especially for Kokura Castle, the Mojiko Retro district and the Mount Sarakura night view, all of which are different from anything in Fukuoka and spread across the Kitakyushu neighborhoods of Kokura and Moji. Many travellers use it as a cheaper base than Fukuoka and day-trip across the Kanmon Strait to Shimonoseki for fugu.

What is the best way to get from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu?

Take the shinkansen from Hakata to Kokura, about 15 minutes for a reserved seat, or a slower JR local train for less than half the price in about 70 minutes. The shinkansen is the fastest and most comfortable option.

When is the best month for good weather?

October and November are the driest, mildest months, with highs of 17 to 22 C and under 100 mm of rain. The best time to visit Kitakyushu guide walks through the trade-offs for every season, and the Kitakyushu weather by month page has the full climate table.
