Kitakyushu is a port city of just under a million people on the north coast of Kyushu, where the Kanmon Strait separates Japan’s two main islands. It has a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers, mild winters, and about 1,800 mm of rain a year. The city was formed in 1963 from five merged towns, which is why it feels like five small cities strung along the coast rather than one big one. Visitors come for Kokura Castle, the Taisho-era Mojiko Retro port, the Mount Sarakura night view and the Kawachi wisteria tunnels, and many use it as a cheaper, quieter base than nearby Fukuoka.

Kitakyushu Weather at a Glance

Kitakyushu’s climate is mild for Japan but humid year-round. January is the coldest month with a 9 C high and a 4 C low, while August is the hottest at 31 C. The rainy season runs June into July, with June the wettest month at 281 mm and July the rainiest at 313 mm, and typhoons can bring heavy rain again in September. The driest months are December and January at around 50 mm each. The full month-by-month breakdown is in the Kitakyushu weather by month guide.

Kitakyushu Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): cherry blossoms at Kokura Castle in late March, wisteria at Kawachi Fuji Garden in late April, highs of 13 to 23 C.
  • Summer (June to August): hot and wet, the tsuyu rainy season, the Kokura Gion Daiko and Tobata Gion festivals in July, highs of 26 to 31 C.
  • Autumn (September to November): typhoon risk early, then clear dry October, autumn foliage in November, highs of 17 to 27 C.
  • Winter (December to February): mild and dry, the Kokura Illumination from November to January, highs of 9 to 11 C.

Kitakyushu Location and What Shapes Its Weather

Kitakyushu faces the Kanmon Strait, the narrow channel between Kyushu and Honshu, and its weather is shaped by the warm Tsushima Current offshore and the mountains inland. The sea keeps winters mild and adds moisture to summer, which is why the city is wetter than inland Japan. Its position at the western end of the Seto Inland Sea also makes it a gateway for typhoons tracking up from the East China Sea in late summer and early autumn.
