The best time to visit Kitakyushu is a two-part answer. For comfortable weather, aim for October and early November, when highs sit around 17 to 22 C and rain drops below 100 mm a month. For the city’s two signature sights, the calendar decides: cherry blossoms around Kokura Castle in late March, and the Kawachi wisteria tunnels in late April to early May. This guide breaks the year down by weather, prices and crowds, and the Kitakyushu city guide has an overview of each Kitakyushu neighborhoods if you want to pick a base first.

April and May are the next best, at 18 to 23 C, though rain climbs to 116 to 129 mm. Avoid June and July, the rainy season, when the two months together dump close to 600 mm of rain. Cherry blossoms in Katsuyama Park around Kokura Castle peak in the last week of March to the first week of April, about a week earlier than Tokyo. You can often find rooms near Kokura Station for a third less than spring and festival-week rates, and the where to stay in Kitakyushu guide lists budget options in both Kokura and Moji. The shoulder months of March and November offer mid-range prices with better weather than winter.

Skip June and July if you want to stay dry: the tsuyu rainy season makes June the wettest month at 281 mm and July the rainiest at 313 mm, with rain on close to half the days. August is the hottest at a 31 C average high, and its 188 mm often arrives in heavy typhoon bursts. September keeps 237 mm of rain and typhoon risk while staying warm at 27 C.
