Mainz is compact, and its neighborhoods split cleanly between the medieval Altstadt, the 19th-century Neustadt, the hilly Oberstadt, and the residential suburbs that climb away from the Rhine. Each has a different price point and feel. This guide walks through them so you can pick a base; for hotel specifics, see our where to stay in Mainz guide, and for the city overview, the Mainz travel guide.

Mainz Neighborhoods: Altstadt (Old Town)

Altstadt

The Altstadt radiates from the Mainzer Dom and the Markt, bounded by the Rhine to the east and Kaiserstrasse to the west. It holds the cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, the half-timbered Kirschgarten and the bulk of the restaurants, bars and wine taverns. The key sights are listed in our things to do in Mainz guide. It suits first-time visitors who want everything on foot, and average hotel rates run 120 to 200 euros a night.

Mainz Neighborhoods: Neustadt

Neustadt

The Neustadt sits just west and south of the old town, built in the late 19th century with wide streets and Grรผnderzeit facades. It is where the main station, independent shops, galleries and cafes cluster, and it is quieter than the Altstadt at night. It suits travelers who want to be near the station and pay slightly less, with hotels around 80 to 140 euros a night. For the mildest months to explore on foot, see the best time to visit Mainz guide.

Mainz Neighborhoods: Oberstadt

Oberstadt

The Oberstadt climbs the hill south of the centre, a leafy, mostly residential district with the Volkspark, the university hospital and St. Stephan’s Chagall church on its edge. It is calmer and greener than the centre, with fewer hotels but more apartments, and suits families and longer stays. The parks stay green year-round in the mild climate covered by our Mainz weather by month guide, and accommodation here averages 70 to 120 euros a night.

Mainz Neighborhoods: Bretzenheim and the University Quarter

Bretzenheim

Bretzenheim, west of the Oberstadt, is anchored by the Johannes Gutenberg University campus and is the student heart of the city. It has cheap cafes, late-night Dรถner shops and direct tram links to the centre on lines 51 and 52. It suits students and budget travelers, with rooms and short-stay apartments from about 60 euros a night.

Mainz Neighborhoods: Gonsenheim and Finthen

Gonsenheim and Finthen

Gonsenheim and Finthen are the western suburbs, largely residential with detached houses, small parks and local bakeries, reached by tram from the centre in about 20 minutes. They suit families and anyone with a car who wants space and quiet, and prices run 60 to 100 euros a night. The tradeoff is a commute to the sights, so check the tram times before booking.

Whichever area you pick, plan around the Mainz events and festivals calendar, since Carnival and the Christmas market change hotel availability fast. For arrival details once you land, see the Mainz travel tips page.
