Okayama sits on the sheltered Seto Inland Sea coast and is nicknamed “hare no kuni,” the Land of Sunshine, for a reason. The city records roughly 1,100 mm of rain and around 2,000 sunshine hours a year, among the driest and sunniest places in western Japan. Expect milder, drier conditions than Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, with four distinct seasons. This guide breaks down the Okayama climate month by month so you can pack correctly.
Okayama Weather in Winter (December to February)
Winter in Okayama is mild by Japanese standards but cold enough for a coat. January is the coldest month with an average high of 9°C (48°F) and a low of 1°C (34°F). Rainfall drops to just 38 mm in January and 33 mm in December, so skies are often clear and dry. Snow is rare in the city center, though the Chugoku mountains 60 km north can get heavy falls. December to February is the cheapest time to visit and pairs well with best time to visit planning.
Okayama Weather in Spring (March to May)
Spring warms quickly. March averages 14°C (57°F) highs and April jumps to 20°C (68°F), making late March to early April the window for cherry blossoms at Korakuen Garden and along the Asahi River. May reaches 25°C (77°F) with 130 mm of rain and 200 sunshine hours, the most of any spring month. It is the most comfortable season for walking between the things to do spread across the city.
Okayama Weather in Summer (June to August)
June brings tsuyu, the rainy season, with 185 mm of rain, the wettest month of the year. It is humid with highs around 28°C (82°F). July and August are hot and sticky, peaking at 33°C (91°F) in August, but rain eases to 95 mm. Because Okayama is shielded by the Shikoku mountains, it gets noticeably less July rain than the Pacific coast of Japan. Check the events and festivals calendar before booking a summer trip.
Okayama Weather in Autumn (September to November)
September can still feel like summer at 28°C (82°F) and carries a typhoon risk, with 160 mm of rain. By October the air dries out, highs drop to 22°C (72°F), and rainfall falls to 90 mm. November is crisp at 16°C (61°F) highs and 7°C (45°F) lows with only 55 mm of rain. October and November are the best months for cycling the Kibi Plain and exploring the neighborhoods on foot.
