Okayama’s event calendar is anchored by two big names: the Saidaiji Eyo naked man festival in February and the Momotaro Festival in August. Between them sit cherry blossom season, summer dance events, and autumn illuminations. Dates below are based on recent years, so confirm exact days before booking.
Okayama Events in Winter (December to February)
Saidaiji Eyo (Naked Man Festival)
Held the third Saturday of February at Saidaiji Temple, the Eyo is Japan’s oldest hadaka matsuri, dating back about 500 years. Thousands of men in white loincloths pack into the temple grounds after dark and scramble for a pair of sacred wooden shingi thrown into the crowd at around 22:00. Whoever catches one is said to win a year of good fortune. Arrive early, expect huge crowds, and book where to stay months ahead since every hotel in Okayama sells out for this night.
Okayama Events in Spring (March to May)
Korakuen Cherry Blossom Season
From late March to early April, Korakuen Garden and the Asahi River promenade bloom with hundreds of cherry trees. The garden stays open into the evening for illuminated night viewing during peak bloom, and the riverside is packed with hanami picnic groups. It is the busiest few days of spring, so time your best time to visit visit around full bloom dates and line up a few extra things to do for the quieter afternoons.
Korakuen Azalea Season
From late April into early May, Korakuen’s azalea bushes and wisteria come into flower. It is less crowded than cherry blossom week but still a good reason to visit the garden. The garden’s spring hours run 7:30 to 18:00.
Okayama Events in Summer (June to August)
Okayama Momotaro Festival
The Momotaro Festival celebrates Okayama’s peach boy folk hero over the first weekend of August. The highlight is a parade with floats and dance troupes moving through the city center, followed by the Uraja Odori, a large street dance competition where teams perform a synchronized routine on the Saturday and Sunday nights. Evening temperatures hover around 30°C (86°F), so bring water and check the weather by month page for August conditions.
Okayama Peach Season
Okayama grows Japan’s most prized white peaches, and the harvest runs from late June through August. Roadside stands and the Okayama Central Market sell them by the box, and the fruit appears in desserts across the city. It is one of the better reasons to visit despite the summer heat.
Okayama Events in Autumn (September to November)
Korakuen Autumn Illumination
In November, Korakuen opens at night for an illuminated event where maple trees and the garden’s lanterns are lit after dark, usually across several weekends. It is a quieter, cooler counterpart to spring hanami. Check the garden’s official site for the exact dates, which change year to year.
Kurashiki Autumn Festival
Kurashiki’s autumn festival, held in mid October in the Bikan quarter, features portable shrines and traditional music along the canal. It coincides with some of the year’s best walking weather, and the neighborhoods around the canal are at their most photogenic. For transport and arrival logistics, see the travel tips guide.
