Pavia sits in the Po Valley, 35 km (22 mi) south of Milan, and has a moderately continental climate: cold, damp, often foggy winters and hot, humid summers. Pavia Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

January is the coldest month with a mean of 2.9C, a high of 5.7C and a low near 0.1C. Daytime temperatures can stay around 0C (32F), and the sky is overcast for long stretches. Snow falls at least once most winters, averaging about 30 cm a year, and during cold snaps the thermometer can drop to -10C (14F) or below. The all-time low is -15.7C, set in February 1929. Pavia Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring warms quickly: March averages 9.9C, April 14.1C and May 18.5C, with May highs reaching 23.6C. Rainfall runs 70 mm in March and 75 mm in both April and May, but sunshine climbs from 170 hours in March to 225 in May. This is one of the most pleasant stretches of the year and a good time to walk the Borgo Ticino neighborhoods district along the river.

July is the warmest month with a mean of 24.9C, a high of 30.3C and a low of 19.4C. The Po Valley heat is humid and poorly ventilated, so it feels hotter than the thermometer reads. During heat waves the temperature can reach 36 to 37C; the record is 38.5C, set in August 2003. Summer is the driest season at 50 mm of rain over 5 days, but afternoon thunderstorms can break out.
