Pavia is a university city of about 73,000 people on the Ticino River in Lombardy, 35 km (22 mi) south of Milan. Its compact medieval center holds a 15th-century cathedral, a Visconti castle and churches that crowned kings of Italy, and 8 km north stands the Certosa di Pavia, one of Italy’s finest monasteries. The climate is moderately continental, with cold, foggy winters and hot, humid summers, and spring and September are the most pleasant times to visit.

Welcome to Pavia

You can see Pavia’s core in a single day: cross the covered Ponte Coperto and walk from the castle to the Duomo in under 20 minutes. The city rewards a slower pace, with riverside walks, a food-and-wine season in autumn and a university calendar that keeps the center busy all year. Use the guides below to plan each part of the trip.

Pavia Weather at a Glance

Pavia’s annual mean temperature is 14.1C (57F), with 780 mm of rain over about 81 days and 2,175 hours of sunshine. January is the coldest month at a 2.9C mean with highs near 6C, while July is the warmest at 24.9C with highs of 30C. October is the wettest month (90 mm) and July the driest (50 mm over just 5 days).

Because the city sits in the Po Valley, summer heat feels heavier than the number suggests, and winter brings damp cold and occasional fog. Snow falls most winters, averaging about 30 cm.

Where Pavia Sits and What Shapes Its Weather

Pavia lies on the left bank of the Ticino, just 5 km (3 mi) upstream from where the river joins the Po. Its position in the flat, enclosed Po Valley at 45 degrees north gives it the valley’s signature climate: stagnant summer air that holds heat and humidity, and cold winter air that settles into fog. The Alps to the north block the moderating influence of the sea, so extremes run wider than in coastal Italy.
