Fuzhou has a humid subtropical climate with a strong maritime influence from the Taiwan Strait. Winters are mild and short (January averages 11C/52F), while summers are long, hot, and wet, with the East Asian monsoon dumping most of the city’s roughly 1,350 mm of annual rain between May and September. The one thing to plan around is typhoon season, which runs from July through early October and can bring a week of heavy, sustained rain when a storm approaches the coast.

The table below gives monthly averages for the city center. Highs climb from a cool 15C (59F) in January to a muggy 34C (93F) in July, and rainfall swings from 45 mm in the driest months to over 200 mm at the summer monsoon peak.

Fuzhou Weather by Month: The Wet Season (May to September)
From May through September the city sits in the monsoon trough. June is the single wettest month at roughly 215 mm of rain, much of it falling as short, intense afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle. Carry a folding umbrella and expect humidity to sit around 80 percent. July and August are also the hottest months, with highs reaching 34C (93F) and heat indexes that feel closer to 40C (104F) once the humidity is factored in. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in these two months.
Fuzhou Weather by Month: The Dry, Mild Season (October to March)
October through March is the most comfortable stretch. October averages 55 mm of rain and a high of 27C (81F), making it the best month for walking the city. December and January are the driest and coolest, with lows around 8C (46F) and only about 40-50 mm of rain each. Frost is extremely rare in the city center, though the surrounding mountains can dip near freezing overnight. February sees the plum and banyan trees flush early, and by March the weather turns noticeably warmer.
Fuzhou Weather by Month: Typhoon and Typhoon-Impact Season
Typhoons are the main weather risk. The season runs from July to early October, peaking in August and September when a named storm makes landfall on the Fujian coast almost every year. A passing typhoon brings 100-200 mm of rain in 48 hours and gusts over 100 km/h. Airlines pause flights at Fuzhou Changle International Airport during a direct hit, and ferry services to the Pingtan islands suspend operations. If you visit in August or September, check the China Meteorological Administration typhoon warnings a few days before flying and build one flexible day into your itinerary.
