Taijiang, on the north bank west of Gulou, is the old trading port district built around Shangxiahang. The riverside here faces Zhongzhou Island, so sunset views are excellent. Choose Taijiang for budget travel, street-food focus, and a more local feel than the polished Gulou lanes.
Best Neighborhoods in Fuzhou: Cangshan District
Cangshan covers the south bank and includes the university campuses, Jiangnan’s old international quarter, and the Expo area. It is greener and more residential, with lower densities and cheaper hotels (200-350 RMB). The downside is distance: crossing to Gulou takes 20-30 minutes by metro Line 1 or taxi. It appeals to longer-stay visitors, students, and families who want parks such as Yantai Mountain and Jinshan Park on their doorstep.
Best Neighborhoods in Fuzhou: Jinshan and the New City
Jinshan, farther out along the Minjiang, is a large 2000s-era residential and shopping district dominated by malls such as Jinshan Wanda Plaza. It has little historic character but offers the city’s cheapest mid-range hotels and easy highway access to the airport. It makes sense only for travelers with a car or a reason to be on the southwest side of town.
