Things to Do in Tirupati: Temples and Shrines
Sri Venkateswara Temple (Tirumala)
The main draw is a 40-minute drive (or 3,500-step Alipiri footpath walk) up the Seshachalam hills to Tirumala at 853 m elevation. The temple is open roughly 3:00 to 01:00 daily, and darshan is free, but the standard queue can run 6 to 12 hours, so most visitors book the Special Entry Darshan ticket at Rs 300 online at tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in, which cuts the wait to 1 to 3 hours. Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple
In the heart of downtown Tirupati, this 9th-century temple is actually older than its hilltop counterpart and was built by Chola-era kings. It is the city’s largest temple complex by footprint, with a 50 m (164 ft) gopuram gateway and fewer crowds than Tirumala. Entry is free, and it is a 10-minute walk from the railway station. Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple (Tiruchanur)
Dedicated to the goddess Padmavathi, consort of Lord Venkateswara, this temple in Tiruchanur sits 5 km south of the city, about 15 minutes by auto-rickshaw. The annual Padmavathi Brahmotsavam in November is its big event. Entry is free and the temple has its own Rs 300/ Rs 50 darshan options during festivals.
Srikalahasti Temple
About 36 km (22 mi) north of Tirupati, the Srikalahasteeswara Temple is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Stalams of Lord Shiva, representing air (vayu). It is famed for the Rahu-Ketu dosha-nivarana pooja offered to the goddess Gnanaprasunamba. Allow a half day for the round trip plus the visit, best combined with a morning drive.

Chandragiri Fort and Raja Mahal Palace
Eleven km southwest of the city, this 11th-century hill fort was the seat of the Vijayanagara emperors after 1585. The Raja Mahal inside is now a museum (open daily except Friday, roughly 10:00 to 17:00, Rs 20 entry) with a small collection of Vijayanagara stone and bronze sculpture. The ramparts give a clear view over the surrounding plains and the Tirumala hills.
Sri Venkateswara Museum
Above the main Tirumala temple, this museum (free entry, roughly 8:00 to 20:00) holds the temple’s collection of historic ornaments, musical instruments, and photographs. It is a good spot to understand the 1,000-year history of the shrine in 30 minutes.
Things to Do in Tirupati: Nature and Waterfalls
Talakona Waterfalls
At 82 m (270 ft), Talakona is the tallest waterfall in Andhra Pradesh, inside the Sri Venkateswara National Park about 49 km (30 mi) west of Tirupati. The falls flow strongest from October to December, and the forest around them shelters the endemic Slender Loris. Entry is around Rs 20 per person, open roughly 9:00 to 17:00, with a 1.5 km walk from the parking area to the base.
Kapila Theertham
This small waterfall and the adjoining Kapileswara Swamy Temple sit directly against the Tirumala foothills, 3 km from the city center. The waterfall runs strongest in the monsoon and after October rains. It is free to visit and is the closest natural site to Tirupati town.
Akasaganga Theertham
Near the top of the Tirumala hill, this perennial waterfall is considered sacred and feeds the temple abhishekam rituals. Pilgrims often walk here after darshan, about 1.5 km from the temple gopuram. It is busiest during the Brahmotsavam and on full-moon days.

Sri Venkateswara National Park
The 353 sq km park wraps around the Tirumala hills and protects sambar deer, wild boar, and over 170 bird species, plus the area’s last panthers. Safari entries are arranged via the forest department office in Tirupati, best booked a day ahead.
