Tirupati sits at the foot of the Seshachalam hills in southern Andhra Pradesh, about 150 km (93 mi) northwest of Chennai. The city has a tropical savanna climate (Koppen Aw): short, comfortable winters, a long hot spell from March to June, and most of its roughly 923 mm (36 in) of annual rain falling in the late-summer-to-autumn northeast monsoon. Annual average temperature is 26.7°C (80°F), with May the hottest month at a 39°C (102°F) average maximum and December the coolest at a 17°C (63°F) average minimum. What matters most for a pilgrim is that the temple town of Tirumala, 20 km uphill at 853 m (2,800 ft) elevation, runs 5 to 7°C cooler than downtown Tirupati on any given day. Tirupati Weather by Month: December to February (Winter)
December to February is the most comfortable stretch of the year, with daytime highs of 28 to 32°C (82 to 90°F) and nights dropping to 17 to 20°C (63 to 68°F). February is the driest month, averaging just 5 mm of rain, and skies are clear for 8 to 9 sunshine hours a day. Mornings at Tirumala can feel chilly, sometimes near 12°C (54°F), so carry a light jacket for the pre-dawn darshan queues even though the plains stay warm. Heat builds fast from March onward. April and May are the two hottest months, with average highs of 38 to 39°C (100 to 102°F) and record days above 44°C (111°F). Nights offer little relief, staying around 26 to 27°C (79 to 81°F). Rainfall is scarce through April, then pre-monsoon thunderstorms arrive in late May and June, pushing monthly totals to 45 to 70 mm. The southwest monsoon brings moderate rain from July to September, and the northeast monsoon from October to November is the wetter of the two. October is the wettest month at about 195 mm falling across roughly 12 wet days, with November close behind at 190 mm. Temperatures moderate to 29 to 33°C (84 to 91°F) highs. Rain tends to arrive as heavy afternoon or evening bursts rather than all-day drizzle, so mornings are often still fine for temple visits.

Humidity runs high year-round, often 70 to 85 percent, because Tirupati sits only 150 m above sea level and not far from the Bay of Bengal. Combined with summer heat this produces a muggy, exhausting feel from April to June. The coolest, least humid conditions of the year are in January, making it the single most pleasant month for walking between temples, though it is also peak pilgrimage season.
