Where to stay in Huangshan comes down to one decision: sleep on the mountain for sunrise, or stay at the base and ride the first cable car up. Summit hotels at 1,600 metres charge 800 to 2,000 CNY a night but put you 15 minutes from a viewpoint at dawn, while Tangkou and Tunxi hotels cost 150 to 800 CNY and mean a 06:00 start. Book summit rooms two to three months ahead for autumn and national holidays. This guide covers the three main areas, and the Huangshan neighborhoods guide explains each base in more detail. For the full picture, start with the Huangshan travel guide.

Where to Stay in Huangshan: On the Mountain (for sunrise)

Sleeping on the mountain is the only way to catch sunrise without a 04:00 alarm and a night-time climb. There are only a handful of hotels on the summit plateau, they are simple by city standards, and they book out fast, especially during the holidays listed in the Huangshan festivals and events calendar. Staying here also means carrying only a daypack and leaving your main luggage at your Tangkou hotel, which most will hold for free.
