Huangshan neighborhoods split into three levels: the city districts around Tunxi, the base town of Tangkou at the mountain’s South Gate, and the summit areas where you sleep if you want sunrise without an alpine start. Where you stay changes your whole trip, so match the area to your plan. City hotels cost 200 to 800 CNY a night, Tangkou runs 150 to 600 CNY, and the handful of summit hotels charge 800 to 2,000 CNY. This guide maps each area, and the where to stay in Huangshan guide lists specific hotels in each. Remember the summit runs 6 to 8C colder than the city, so check the Huangshan weather by month guide before you decide between a city base and a summit bed.

Huangshan Neighborhoods: The City Districts

Tunxi (Huangshan City Center)

Tunxi is the commercial heart of Huangshan City, wrapped around the Xin’an River and the 1.5km Tunxi Old Street of Ming and Qing shopfronts. It has the airport (TXN), the main bus station, the widest choice of restaurants and the cheapest hotels in the region, from 200 CNY a night. Stay here if you want food and transport on your doorstep, then day-trip to the mountain 70km away. It suits first-time visitors and anyone arriving by air or rail, and it is where the Crowne Plaza and Huangshan International Hotel sit.

Huangshan North (High-Speed Rail Area)

Huangshan North is the new district around the high-speed railway station, about 8km north of Tunxi, where trains from Hefei, Shanghai and Hangzhou arrive. It is mostly functional, with chain hotels from 180 CNY, but convenient if you have an early train or arrive late. There is little to do in the immediate area, so most people transfer straight to Tangkou or Tunxi by shuttle, which the Huangshan travel tips guide explains.

Yixian County (Hongcun and Xidi Villages)

Yixian county, about an hour west of Tunxi, holds the UNESCO villages of Hongcun and Xidi plus the Mukeng bamboo forest. A small but growing set of boutique guesthouses in converted Ming and Qing houses charge 300 to 1,200 CNY a night and suit travelers who want to photograph the villages at first light before the tour buses arrive. It is a quieter, more atmospheric base than the city, but you need a car or driver to reach the mountain’s gates. See the Huangshan travel guide for the full destination overview.

Huangshan Neighborhoods: The Mountain Base

Tangkou (South Gate)

Tangkou is the main gateway town at the mountain’s South Gate, where the shuttle buses depart for the Yungu and Yuping cable cars. It is packed with mid-range hotels, restaurants and gear shops from 150 to 600 CNY a night, and it is the closest you can stay to the mountain without sleeping on it. Most first-timers overnight here, ride the first shuttle at 06:30, and use it as a luggage base while they walk the summit. It suits hikers and budget-to-mid-range travelers, with the Holiday Inn Express and Huangshan Longpeng Hotel among the main options.

Hot Spring Area (Wenquan)

The Hot Spring area sits just below Tangkou at the foot of the mountain, around the 42C Huangshan Hot Spring pools. It has a handful of resort hotels from 400 CNY upward and suits travelers who want a soak after hiking, or a quiet base away from Tangkou’s bus crowd. It is the natural choice for a two-night recovery stay, and the Banyan Tree Huangshan, an Anhui-style villa resort, sits nearby for a splurge.

Huangshan Neighborhoods: On the Mountain

Beihai (North Sea Area)

Beihai is the main summit accommodation cluster on the east side, closest to Begin-to-Believe Peak, Lion Peak and the sunrise viewpoints, and served by the Yungu cable car. The Beihai and Shilin hotels sit here, charging 800 to 1,800 CNY a night. It suits sunrise chasers and photographers, but rooms sell out weeks ahead in autumn and during holidays, so check the Huangshan festivals and events calendar before booking, and you pay a premium for the 1,600-metre location.

Xihai and Tianhai (West and South Areas)

Xihai and Tianhai cover the west and south of the summit plateau, around the Xihai Grand Canyon, Bright Summit and the Yuping cable car. The Xihai and Paiyunlou hotels anchor Xihai, while the Baiyun Hotel serves Tianhai near Bright Summit. This is the best base for the Grand Canyon loop and for a sunrise at Bright Summit without a long pre-dawn walk. Prices mirror Beihai at 800 to 1,800 CNY, and the west side catches the best sunset light.
