Huangshan festivals and events follow two calendars: the fixed solar-calendar dates of Chinese national holidays, and the lunar calendar that sets Spring Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. The biggest crowds land during national holidays, when domestic travel peaks, while the scenic events, like the azalea bloom and the autumn photography season, track the weather. Book summit hotels and cable car tickets weeks ahead for any holiday week, and use the best time to visit Huangshan guide to time your trip around them.

Huangshan Festivals and Events: Spring (March to May)

The spring highlight is the Huangshan azalea bloom, when pink and red azaleas cover the upper slopes from late April through May, peaking around the first two weeks of May. Photographers line the Beihai and Xihai viewpoints at dawn. Early April also brings the Huangshan Maofeng tea-picking season, when the famous green tea’s first flush is harvested and tea gardens around the mountain open for picking experiences. Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Day) falls on 4 to 5 April and brings a short domestic travel rush, while Labour Day, 1 to 5 May, is one of the busiest windows of the year, with cable car queues over an hour.

Huangshan Festivals and Events: Summer (June to August)

Summer has the fewest dedicated events because the plum rain and heat keep crowds thinner, but the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, usually in June, with zongzi rice dumplings sold along Tunxi Old Street and dragon boat races on the Xin’an River through the city. July and August are the waterfall season, when the mountain’s streams run at full flow after the rains. School holidays from early July to late August push weekend numbers up, but weekdays stay manageable compared with spring and autumn.

Huangshan Festivals and Events: Autumn (September to November)

Autumn hosts the Huangshan International Photography Festival, usually held in late October or November, when the sea of clouds and autumn foliage are at their best and exhibitions open in Tunxi and Yixian. The Mount Huangshan Tourism Festival also runs in autumn with hiking events and folk performances. Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, in September or October, with mooncakes and lantern displays in the city. National Day Golden Week, 1 to 7 October, is the single busiest stretch of the year, when summit hotels sell out and queues hit two hours, so avoid it unless you have no choice. See the things to do in Huangshan list for the sights worth queuing for.

Huangshan Festivals and Events: Winter (December to February)

Winter brings Chinese New Year, the lunar Spring Festival that falls in late January or February, when the mountain sees a short, intense rush of domestic family travel and hotels fill fast. Lantern Festival, on the 15th day of the first lunar month, closes the season with lantern displays in Tunxi. The quieter draw is the Huangshan winter snow and rime-ice season from December to February, when photographers arrive for snowy pines and frozen peaks rather than an organised festival. Off-season entry of 150 CNY applies from 1 December, so winter is the budget window despite the cold, which the Huangshan weather by month guide details.
