The best time to visit Huangshan for clear views and mild hiking is late April to early May, or late September to mid-November. You want dry air, which opens the views, and cool temperatures, which keep the stone-step climbs comfortable. Avoid June and July for heavy rain and fog, and the first week of October for National Day crowds that push cable car queues past two hours. This guide breaks down each season with real numbers so you can pick your window, and links to the month-by-month data in our Huangshan weather by month guide. See the Huangshan travel guide for the full destination overview.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Spring (April to May)

Spring is the best balance of comfort and scenery. April and May bring city highs of 21 to 25C (70 to 77F) and summit temperatures of 8 to 12C (46 to 54F), cool enough for a full day on the trails. The Huangshan azaleas cover the upper slopes in late April and May, and the sea of clouds appears on clear dawns after spring rain. The main risk is rainfall, which runs 180 to 220mm a month, so pack a poncho. Go in the last week of April or the first half of May, but avoid 1 to 5 May, the Labour Day holiday, when domestic tour groups fill the paths. For the sights to prioritise, see the things to do in Huangshan list.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is the most reliable season for the sea of clouds, the main reason people photograph Huangshan. Rainfall drops from 140mm in September to 80mm in November, humidity falls, and cold air pools in the valleys, so a sea of clouds forms under the peaks on roughly 50 percent of early mornings in October and November. Maple, ginkgo and beech foliage turns across the lower slopes from mid-October. Summit temperatures sit at 5 to 15C (41 to 59F), so bring a warm layer for pre-dawn. Skip 1 to 7 October (National Day Golden Week), when queues run two hours and summit hotels sell out; late September and mid-to-late November are quieter with near-identical light.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Winter (December to February)

Winter delivers the snow and rime-ice scenes that fill Huangshan postcards, with the emptiest trails and off-season entry tickets. The park entrance drops to 150 CNY from 190 CNY, and hotels cut rates by 30 to 50 percent. The trade-off is cold and ice: summit temperatures hover at -1 to 0C (30 to 32F), snow falls on 8 to 12 days a month, and some stone paths close for safety. You also risk a cable car being shut for annual maintenance in January or February. If you go, bring microspikes and book a summit hotel such as the Xihai Hotel to catch a snowy sunrise. Packing and transport detail is in the Huangshan travel tips guide.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Summer Months to Avoid (June to August)

June and July are the worst months for views. The plum rain (meiyu) season delivers 230 to 300mm of rain a month and over 45 percent of the annual 1,670mm total, and cloud can sit on the mountain for days. July and August are also the hottest at 32C (90F) in the city, though the summit stays a tolerable 17C (63F), and August can catch the edge of a typhoon. The one upside is waterfalls at full flow and lush green slopes. If summer is your only option, start by 06:00, stay overnight on the mountain for a clear dawn, and book rooms and cable car tickets online in advance to dodge the queues.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Cheapest and Quietest Times

The cheapest and quietest times to visit Huangshan are the first two weeks of December, the whole of January, and early February outside Chinese New Year. Off-season entry runs 150 CNY, summit hotels drop to 500 to 900 CNY a night from 1,200 to 2,000 CNY in peak season, and you can walk the popular trails almost alone on weekdays. February’s Chinese New Year, by contrast, is one of the busiest weeks of the year, with domestic families on holiday. November weekdays after Golden Week and mid-March are the other low-price windows. Check the exact festival dates before you commit using the Huangshan festivals and events calendar.

Best Time to Visit Huangshan: Month-by-Month Verdict

  • January and February: Snow and rime ice, empty trails, 150 CNY entry, but icy paths and possible cable car maintenance. Good for photographers.
  • March: Warming but damp, azaleas start late in the month, light crowds. A solid value pick.
  • April to early May: Best overall: azaleas, mild temperatures, sea of clouds. Avoid Labour Day (1 to 5 May).
  • June and July: Avoid. Plum rain, fog and 230 to 300mm monthly rainfall hide the views.
  • August: Hot and humid with typhoon risk, but green slopes and full waterfalls.
  • September to November: Best for the sea of clouds and foliage. Avoid 1 to 7 October; late November is the quiet sweet spot.
  • December: Cold and quiet with a chance of first snow; off-season prices start 1 December.
